New hover car trial planned for Tel Aviv

New hover car trial planned for Tel Aviv

Visitors to Tel Aviv may one day be able to dodge the city’s traffic in a novel way – by travelling in a network of hover cars suspended above the ground. According to a BBC report, a 500m loop for two-man “jet-like” vehicles will shortly be built on the grounds of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

- Its ambitions include an aim to “revolutionise public transportation and, with it, urban and suburban commuting.”
Using Magnetic Levitation technology, the system will be tested and refined on the IAI campus – the most substantial trial to date. It is due to be up and running by the end of next year, the BBC reports. The hover cars in the trial will travel at around 43 miles per hour, although they are capable of much higher speeds.

- If the Tel Aviv prototype succeeds, the two companies say they expect the network would be implemented on a commercial basis in the city. If put in place, the system would allow locals and visitors to order a vehicle to a station by smartphone then head to their destination. Jerry Sanders of skyTran described the Tel Aviv project as “a breakthrough”.

They offered to build this in Detroit first: link. It would be cool if it works and works well, but until then, it is just another transit idea.

3rd pic looks like Houston skyline but the cars on the road don't look like the typical mix you'd find in Houston.

They also plan to build more routes in France, India, and the Bay Area.

I lol'd so hard at that badly photoshopped pic of Houston.

Cool idea regardless though, but when I saw "hover" I got excited about an actual hover car, haha.

Not a chance. This won't fly in the Bay Area.

This plan won't work and quite frankly the world is doomed anyway. Why bother at this point?

Nice. I like the honesty.

Overcrowding will be an interesting topic 20 years from now.

lol ok I was being too harsh.

I hope that these vehicles do turn out to work and cut their emissions by a large amount but I'm seeing lots of talk and no actions so sometimes I wonder if these problems are actually being dealt with.

Also I think public transportation could help reduce overcrowding on our roads.

Did they really have to botch the Houston skyline in order to promote their product?

In this entire picture, there would only be a max of 7 passengers being transported.

Even if the line had one of these things whizzing by with a person in them every second, that's still only 360 people an hour being moved.

And exactly which wind/seismic codes is this thing designed to withstand?

The world is not doomed: our world civilization, maybe.

The planet, IMO, very likely does not know we exist. She's awfully old, and, incredibly tough. After all, she is built from agglomeration of comets, asteroids, meteors, and, cosmic dust. When the asteroid smashed into what is now Yucatan and the dinosaurs were wiped out, the earth just went burp and grew a couple of hundred yards larger in radius.

So, we are left with a dooms day for our species? I doubt it. There will be more than a few great great great grandchildren. Of course we may be living in stone, log, or mud homes for a while, but, we humans have been there before, and, will not stay down long.

Besides, now is the time for personal courage, not fear. Be courageous by refusing to give up hope and by insisting on following a personal code of conduct despite what others tell you to do.
