It technically is in New Jersey; Liberty Island is a Manhattan exclave surrounded by Jersey City.
Yeah, the Statue of Liberty branding image was even in northwest PA (Erie) quite a bit since it borders NY State. There are billboards off I-90 heading towards NY with ads for NY attractions... Niagara Falls predominately of course, but also even for NYC attractions (never mind the fact that its 6+ hours away and likely not the way you would drive there anway...). All ads seem to have/had the Statue of Liberty featured. Even the Niagara Falls ads... NY branding, I guess.

Until an honest (no cheating spire) 2000ft tall tower gets built, the ESB will continue to reign supreme.

I tend to agree with this. Doesn't have to be 2,000 ft., but has to be close. And it has to be iconic.

At that point, there will be a new king.

Location also matter. What made the ESB the clear king of New York's skyscrapers is its height and isolation from other structures.

The NYC skyline is unique because it's a large cluster of buildings with a few that significantly stand out from the rest in height. Even if taller buildings rise up, Midtown will always be dominated by the Empire State. Especially when many of the new towers are skinny as hell.
