what to do in yuma/arizona

thought this would be the best place to ask, sorry if its not! basically, i'm spending 8 days in phoenix at the end of December. 4 of these days will be in Yuma, 4 we're not sure yet. So I guess my question would be, what can I do with 4 days in or around the Yuma area and what should I do with the other 4 days? I definitely want to see Sedona and the GC, is that manageable?

Yuma is in the far SW corner of Arizona, the Grand Canyon is in the far NW corner and Sedona is sort of North Central. So youd have to be leaving Phoenix to go to those places, not Yuma likely.

There's really not much to do in Yuma, its a tiny town of nothing really. There are some sand dunes near Yuma that people like to ride dune buggies and 4 wheelers through, but thats about it:

You can also check out the Territorial Prison or Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park

or you could kill yourself.

EDIT: Also these things aren't in Yuma but here are some state parks in the Southern AZ region:
Tubac Presidio State Park
Karchner Caverns
Patagonia Lake State Park
Picacho Peak State Park
Roper Lake State Park
Tombstone Courthouse State Park

Id say for the most part you need to get out of Yuma. You could go to Bisbee, its a cool old mining town. Or Tombstone if youre into Western stuff. You could also drive over to Tucson and see if there's a UA hoops game going on, eat some Mexican food and check out San Xavier del Bac.

But really in and immediately right around Yuma its slim pickens. Though I do recall when I was a kid they had the Burger King with the largest indoor playplace in Arizona...so theres uh, that.

yeah, the plan is to fly into phoenix, drive to yuma and stay 4 days at relatives, then drive up to the northern part and hit up sedona/grand canyon on the last 4 days. is that doable? thanks for the reply though, sounds like yuma is going to be a bit frustrating.

You can be in Mexico in about 10 minutes from Yuma. There is a small city right on the border, but I forget the name of it. Fun way to kill half a day shopping and drinking Margaritas.

My wife and I will be visiting my mom and step dad in Yuma Dec 25-28, then driving up to PHX for 3-4 days. Heading down from Boston for the Holidays. Sounds like about the same time you will be there.

Yuma has a casino if you like gambling. You can also ride boats and jet skis on the colorado river.

I lived in Yuma for 2 years in high school (my freshmen and sophomore years) and I don't say this often about towns/cities, but there is really nothing to do in Yuma. If possible you should shorten your trip to 2 days there. The Mexican border town is Algadones, and it's a typical border town. The old prison is worth checking out, but just barely worth it. The sand dunes out side of Yuma are cool to look at for about 5 minutes. Other than that, there are only bad strip malls and agricultural fields. There is great Mexican food, I'll give it that. If you have time to spend in Arizona, spend it in Phoenix, Sedona, or up north. The scenery is much better. Yuma's a hell hole.

Arizona is a physically beautiful state. There's a reason Yuma's in the far southwest corner.

We Arizonans may not agree on much, but we generally agree on one thing: Yuma sucks.

i don't think it's that bad. it's got some cool old historical bldgs downtown, the 2 cool old bridges that cross the river, the old mission across the river (technically in Calif.), and the several things others mentioned.
plus, san diego is not that far away! also on the way to Phx, stop and get a date shake off Interstate 8 in Dateland.

San Luis is the border town. Not much to do in San Luis AZ but you could go to San Luis Rio Colorado and it is a typical border town although not as notorious as Tijuana or Juarez. There are several strips of bars and clubs near the customs entrance and of course if you want to buy things cheap, you can go there as well. Yuma is ok and the sand dunes in Cali are not far away but i'd lean towards going to Tucson because there is slightly more to do and you can always visit the other places around SE Arizona like Bisbee, Tombstone, Mt. Lemmon here in Tucson area.

The Cleveland Nat. Forrest just E. of SD is the ONLY thing that is nice about that drive.
