It's Framework from Porte (231 Pender):

http://www.porte.ca/framework/

They did Ginger in Chinatown (718 Main) and the rest of their stuff is in Surrey, Langley, Burnaby Mountain..

Historic info on Henry’s Service Station:
aka Lion's Gate Super Service Station

http://historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/...u.aspx?id=7791

Every time I went by there, I always wondered why that large plot of land was sitting there barely used - just a parking lot.

The Garage was obviously original, but also looked ready to fall over in a bad winter storm.

The "natural" state of Vancouver is pretty much no views at all, since you would have been surrounded by high forests 99% of the time.

How to harness a changing Chinatown

HADANI DITMARS

...

His vision is for a mid-rise building with a food hall on the ground floor – a Pan-Asian version of Manhattan’s famed Eataly (an emporium of all things edible and Italian) – that would draw in locals and visitors. Above this would be retail, office and studio space, which Mr. Shieh envisions would include a Chinese school, then a selection of “shared” apartments and a rooftop social club.

This new model of neighbourhood development is not only concerned with local revitalization but also with larger issues around affordability. The normal approach to this is usually to make residential units smaller. But Mr. Shieh – who had a prise de conscience when he realized he didn’t want to be part of a design industry that blindly fed consumption – has a different take. “It’s not about owning any more – it’s about access.”

...

The initial conceptual designs for the building done by Vancouver’s Dialog looked to inter-generational living as a way to beat high real estate prices. Thus, the concept of shared apartments, units that feature separate entrances, bedrooms and bathrooms along with shared kitchen and laundry facilities.

The Keefer Block is moving pretty fast.
That's the Solterra one (smallest of the bunch) so it'll be done before we know it.
Thanks for the update.

First some bad news, even though last years Chinatown night market more then doubled attendance it's been canceled this year as they couldn't come to an agreement with the city about removing the requirement to tear down at the end of every night, something the ones in Richmond don't have to deal with. They are working on securing a different location where this won't be an issue but it won't be this year.

Good news is there is a proposal for the large empty lot at Keefer and Columbia.

Quote:
The enquiry was received to rezone the site at 105 Keefer Street located in Chinatown South (HA-1A). At this pre-application rezoning stage, the applicant has developed some initial concepts and would like to receive early feed-back from the Chinatown Historic Area Planning Committee.
The proposal is to rezone the site to accommodate a mixed-use 13-storey building with retail space at-grade and residential uses above the ground floor. It is being developed under the Rezoning Policy for Chinatown south (HA-1A). The proposed height is maximum 120 ft. and proposed FSR is approximately 7.65.

Staff and applicant will present the project and provide more information. The formal rezoning proposal will be presented to CHAPC when received.

Huh, I know a company that has a very large, underused piece of asphalt that could use a bit of PR right now...
