The Boston City Hall really doesn't deserve the hate it gets. It has some really nice facade patterns. It's like a symphony of geometric shapes and high quality concrete, and there was certainly a lot of thought put into the building.

It's beautiful in its own avant-garde way, not by the standards of traditional architecture. I think the main reason it sees a lot of disdain is because it's in the "dated" stage, where basically anything that reminds one of its era is seen as ugly. However, once people grow out of that it is appreciated for the icon it is. It has happened to many different styles of architecture thoughout history.

We are losing a lot of nice brutalist buildings recently, so I hope nothing will ever happen to this one.

There are plenty of thoughtless, nasty, cheap developer-designed messes that are far more deserving of 'ugliest building in the world.'
Like this one on the last page, was there any thought whatsoever put into this design? It's not sleek, it has no cool facade, it has nothing of architectural value whatsoever.

Here is some real ugliness. No architectural integrity, just pure mess.

Gaaaaak!!!

Even in architectural school, someone has to graduate last in their class. And all of the previous four pages attest to this.

Not only did they get designed, developed and proposed, some committee had to actually approve them.

Where are we going as a species?

They just built one of these next to my workplace. I kept wondering when it was going to be completed......Little did I know, it WAS completed. 5 or 6 types of "rock" and brick facades plus open areas of just concrete. The building looks like it was designed by a 4 year old.

Boston City Hall is probably the poster child for anyone against Brutalism. It's valid given how the plaza is a lifeless space. Brutalism's failure isn't in the building itself but the fact that the Architects extended the monumental, severe aesthetic to the spaces around the building. I see it a lot. They should rip that plaza up and replace it with something that contrasts with the building, something human scaled and inviting with plant life, curves and natural materials to contrast with the building. Currently, it's a harsh concrete wasteland and the building suffers because of that. Perhaps they don't want to mess with the "vision" but to me it is a failure despite how much I like the building itself.

While these examples can all cause visual pain of lesser or greater magnitude with either the random use of historical ornament or just plain banality, I was surprised by this example of Persian revival! I have not seen this before. It looks like the columns and animal reliefs are cribbed directly from Persepolis.

Boston City Hall would be a lot less offensive if not for the horrible pedestrian side of it. I'm a huge defender of Brutalism and even I hate it.

not the ugliest building in the world, perhaps... but easily my least favorite "prominent" building in Birmingham:

concerning post 63 . . .
out of the 12 shots . . .
#s - 2 - 3 - 4 - 6 -7 - 11 - . . . all made me smile . . .
Ugly buildings that make me smile . . . aren't so ugly after all . . .
they're like heartwarming outsider art.
and post 69 - the Mecca complex . . .
is like Big Ben (London) . . meets Terminal Tower complex (Cleveland) . . meets
Michael Graves Dolphin Hotel (Disney World Orlando) . . .
It's an impressive scale - with lots of visual interest - that will age well . . .

Many of these are fugly to the point of being extremely offensive.

This is a jail in DTSD. I know we need these, but why does it have to be located in such a prominent spot with decent height?

I agree, although I would encourage the four year old that designed this to seek a future anywhere but in architecture-horrendously ugly, with as much personality as a wet cracker

I nominate the under construction Hyatt House in Jersey City. They took a beautiful old bank building and added an ugly glass hat on top. I think the renders look awful and it's not showing much promise in person.

Cyclopsian Clocktower of Doom once again, just for shock value. The hardware store in the foreground adds a special touch of beauty.
