Wow! This is one of those end-of-the-line mystery cities I was always curious about but never expected to ever see. It's an interesting place because despite being a fairly decent sized city it is massively obscure, culturally and geographically.
This is why America is so awesome: that a place like this is in the same country as say, Lubec, ME or Astoria, OR.
Nice Brownsville photo tour. Worked in the area in 2000 and found the place to be very strange, but also very interesting... totally different world. I "smuggled" far more cheap liquor across the border from Matamoros than was allowed by law due to customs agent ineptness. That was a fun time... thanks for the memories, Boris.
Great photos! Never been to this town, the only thing I know about it was the Bob Dylan song (Brownsville Girl). I wonder if Bob ever visited La Movida Night Club?
A few thoughts to consider...The Brownsville Independent School District which serves Brownsville and a few unincorporated areas just outside the city has a total student enrollment approaching that of San Francisco, California, a city four times its population. (Construction has just started on what will become the city's sixth public high school.) There is one fairly large shopping mall, with an even larger one planned for the next couple of years or so, both of these on the north side of the city. Chess is an area of pride, as the students from Brownsville compete very favourably at the state and even national tournaments at all levels from Kindergarten (that's right) through college. (The University of Texas at Brownsville one a recent national championship in the collegiate level.). The Port of Brownsville is one of the major seaports in Texas. Brownsville has a slogan (which could also apply to San Diego) "on the border by the sea".
