Wow, what a great thread! In the very first photo MonkeyRonin posted, the aerial of Boston looking east, does anyone suppose that large tank in the upper part of the photo was the molasses tank owned by the Purity Distilling Company which burst open in 1919, drowning 21 people? I know that's the section of the city where the disaster happened (the north edge of the North End near the Hahbuh).

This is the most beautiful downtown I've ever seen!

The building on the left...I'm just speechless!

Moscow 1886 (according to another source - 1867)
the pics are taken from Cathedral of Christ The Saviour

source Live Journal

The photographer did not mean to make a panorama, thus he did not create overlap between adjacent shots, so there are some gaps in the concatenation.

and another version, based on the same initial pics

The early-mid 1860s seem like a more reasonable date for those Moscow photos. Moscow's population is listed at 750,000 for the mid-1880s and 370,000 for the mid-1860s. Housing conditions would have been very crowded in 19th century Moscow but not that crowded.

Here are a few more pictures I have found:

Aerials of Halifax (North End), ~1920s

King Street, Saint John (looks to be around 1900)

Downtown Berlin, Ontario (now Kitchener) when it was getting it's streetcars put in. Ironic how we're finally catching up to our own urbanity from 100 years ago, lol. I can't even recognize the town in these photos.

Wow, that Moscow pano is fantastic. It's amazing how dramatically that city has changed over the years.

I'm still mad that most of these cities have half of the buildings destroyed for parking lots and such
I imagine if they had kept the street cars then most American cities would much much better public transport systems then they have now lol.
