I'm usually very open to new, cutting edge architectural styles but that thing is god awful. (pretty much every structure in that photo is terrible)

Boston City Hall gets my vote for ugliest building AND worst urban design mistake.

That's such a tough question since there's so many buildings in Dubai.

We probably should preface this thread that what one considers ugly architecture/design, like everything, is entirely subjective.

For me, I've started to like and appreciate Boston City Hall over the past couple years as I've grown a taste for mid-century modern, and then onto even a bit of brutalism. No one can argue that the public space is any good around Boston City Hall, or most brutalist structures for that matter, but the design has grown on me as an art form. Same goes for the lattice covered Ruth's Chris building too.

I'd say buildings that try to be something the architect has no familiarity with, and it shows, are some of the ugliest. There is a lot of nouveau historical that fits into this category. Or designs that are 20-30 years outdated, but being designed as new construction today. Or something that blends architectural styles into an ugly, non-conforming soup. Case and point:

Where I currently live (London, Ontario, Canada), the fugliest of the fuglies is this (London Courthouse bldg). Ugly enough to stop a clock.

I know, it does not count as skyscraper, but in my opinion the Ostankino tower is the ugliest strucure on earth:

He's dead.

He died, perhaps fittingly, before the building was completed.

By the way, reading on wikipedia that the initial cost of the scottish parliament was estimated at 20 million euros, it ended up costing over 400 million euros!

Really?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottis...ament_Building

It is actually an interesting read. I'm not a fan of some of the exterior design elements, but the interior looks fantastic. And the original cost estimates look like they took nothing into account. Realistically 200-400 Pounds for this isn't terrible when you consider size, construction, design, etc. The initial estimates are what was way off.

purposely building ugly is expensive; whereas accidentally ugly is cheap.
