Nassau nix leaves door open to possible Islanders move to B'klyn

If the Islanders want to come to Brooklyn, it's smooth skating now. Nassau County voters last night rejected a referendum to borrow $400 million for a new arena for the Islanders, making it a strong possibility that club owner Charles Wang moves the long-struggling franchise out of the Nassau Coliseum when its lease expires in 2015.

For some time, officials overseeing the planned Barclays Center being built for the NBA’s Nets in Brooklyn have said the arena would be too small for NHL hockey.

However, arena officials yesterday confirmed the Barclays Center will be fitted with an NHL-regulation size arena when it opens in Sept. 2012, although they declined comment on potential interest in the Islanders. The arena holds 18,000 seats for basketball, but some seating would have to be removed to accommodate hockey. Sources said the arena could hold about 14,500 seats for hockey.

I think every multi-sport stadium is like that, they add or remove seats depending on what's being played.

How do those seat counts compare to MSG?

Not to get off topic here but is there any way at all that the Lighthouse Project can find any additional sources of funding? I sense that this basically it for the project which if so should result in Mr. Wang taking his team to another market where Long Island cannot reap any benefits whatsoever from the NHL.

As for the Islanders moving to Brooklyn, I just don't see them playing in an arena that is clearly designed to be basketball only with a few concerts. The Islanders would do better in KC or Seattle or even Vegas if something can come to fruition there.

I think the arena in Brooklyn will do quite well, and fans from Long Island could always hop a train straight to the arena. It could be a win - win. And as Markowitz says, technically they'd still be on Long Island.

Including NETS Basketball, the Barclays Center will have more than 200 events annually, including premier concerts, monthly major professional boxing cards, professional tennis, top college basketball and hockey, and family shows, such as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and Disney on Ice. To date, the Barclays Center has received commitments to host 149 events annually, and that list continues to grow.

That would make it the smallest arena in the league. Pro sports arenas SHOULD be in urban areas with heavy transit though, so that would be a plus.

Barclays Center officials now say that the Prospect Heights sports arena will be able to host a professional hockey team — a flip-flop that comes days after Nassau County voters rejected a new home for the struggling New York Islanders.

An Islanders move to Brooklyn would enrage Madison Square Garden officials, whose Rangers currently have a monopoly in the city. But the Islanders’ deal with the NHL only requires the team to stay on Long Island — a plot of land that includes Brooklyn at its western apex.

“We’ve got lots of hockey fans, and since we’re technically still on Long Island, they can call themselves the ‘Brooklyn Islanders,’ ” Markowitz told our sister-publication, the New York Post. “If they come here, I would personally take the first spin on the Zamboni.”

Im gonna keep my fingers crossed, if the Islanders move to Bklyn then that will only further spark development and demand in this neighborhood.

This is why I love arenas and even stadiums because they are completed so quickly. It was just 'yesterday' when they started.

They've had terrible attendance for many years now.

I hope they're not putting words into the Rangers mouths by saying it would enrage them. We don't know that until we hear from them directly. I think it would increase interest in hockey in the city and greatly strengthen the rivalry. The Islanders have basically been an NHL afterthought for years.

Not neccessarily the Rangers but their owners - the same owners that aren't happy about the NETS moving to Brooklyn. I don't see why they would feel any differently about the Islanders moving in on what they perceive to be their "turf". But that's the way it is in professional sports. It's why you can't just move another team, even a minor league team, into town without support from the already established teams. The Mets got a new minor league stadium on Coney Island just because former mayor Guliani wanted to put one on his beloved Staten Island (for the Yankees of course). But as far as the Dolans go (owners of the Rangers/Knicks) they didn't even want the Jets to get a new stadium on the west side of Manhattan, and fought very hard to see that one never see the light of day.

Coke Will Make Special Sodas For The New Nets Arena

New York might be the headquarters of Pepsi, but don't expect to find any at the new Barclays Center when it opens over the Atlantic Yards in September 2012. Not one drop. The stadium has canceled its previous deal with the smaller Jones Soda company in exchange for a multimillion-dollar deal with the Atlanta-based soda giant.

"Our goal is making this arena all about Brooklyn—even the food and drink—and one thing that became clear to me is Brooklyn's a Coke town," Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark told the Post. And it is true, the old Pepsi-Cola plant and the sign that go with it are in Queens, not Brooklyn. Anyway, as part of the deal—said to be similar to the seven-year $1.7 million annual deal the stadium previously signed with Jones—Coke will reportedly be treating fans with "special Brooklyn-themed flavored beverages" along with the company's trademark sodas.

The roof can clearly be seen under construction. This is a really exciting time to be living in Brooklyn. It's so close and there hasn't been an arena of this magnitude in Brooklyn.
