Are you speaking of Cityplace or something further north?

I agree, it reminds me of a Dallas office park development, I guess it will all come down to wether or not the developer will use quality materials.

More details about the Chargers' stadium are leaking out:

Also they might not need the 2/3rds vote

If they want any chance with voters they better get going on what they plan on selling to the public soon.

Otherwise I'm seeing Raiders black and silver riding into San Diego's NFL future. Lol

Cityplace was exactly what I was thinking about. San Diego deserves something world class and contemporary. Especially on a scale this big.

If this project ends up being as high-quality as Cityplace, San Diegans ought to be delighted

Both had tremendous success. Can it happen here? Sure, but not without the bus yard being available and a serious investor. Marty Block is also pushing the SDSU expansion to the Q, which could use lots of state funding. It would be hard to turn that down, and I doubt he could get that funding pushed to downtown. The bus yard is still technically not available. The convadium team is pushing people around taking a risk trying all this. That's the main difference in all this. The convadium team is going to push until someone or something stops them.
Maybe the best way to stop this would be to make the bus yard available for development. That still doesn't solve the fact there are surrounding parcels privately owned. Hell, the tailgate lot is owned by JMI and he is a major driver in all this. See the picture below. They really are great ideas, but without a competitor they are essentially useless.
I'm not trying to be a downer about all this but it just doesn't seem likely.
It looks like there will be a sequel to this meeting on Saturday:

Stadium alternative heading to workshop [SD Union Tribune]
2:53 p.m. March 29, 2016 | Updated, 4:45 p.m.

An alternative vision for the Chargers stadium site in East Village will be discussed at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Newschool of Architecture & Design, 1249 F St.

A group called East Village People, along with the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects and Citizens Coordinate for Century 3, are sponsoring the workshop, which is open to the public.

If anyone's interested, Cory Briggs will take part in an "Ask Me Anything" question and answer session on reddit's San Diego page on Sunday, April 3 at 6pm. It will be mainly about the Citizen's Initiative, but he may answer questions on other topics as well.

Thought the San Diegans on this forum might want to come up with some good questions for him. Any ideas?

California Theater Tower Proposal

Really cool residential tower proposed to replace the abandoned 9 story California Theater at 4th and C.

Overture: 40 story, 282 residential unit tower that would replicate part of the California Theater at ground level, including a new California Theater Sign and Marquee.

If no delays (Ha!), demolition could occur in a year with completion in the beginning of 2019.

Full story and pictures...

Love that something is going up there! We've had 25 years to restore it so don't think that's feasible anymore.

Not in love with the design so hopefully it changes a bit in the next 2 years

I hope they build it. It's either this, or another 4 decades of a crumbling facade. Funny how these historical preservationists always have grand ideas but never any way to pay for them.

California Theatre Tower

I think the tower looks awesome, especially in light of what it will be replacing.

The proposed tower is only OK design-wise (designed by a firm that is capable of good work, as with their 888 S. Olive in LA), but it would be a huge improvement over the sad California Theater that is a drag on the surrounding area.

Too bad they think that in order to mollify SOHO they have to "re-create" fake facades of the old building. Very un-dignified way for the California to end its days -- better to tear it down, put it out of its misery and let it rest in peace than to have it live on as a pastiche (and I am one who believes that, generally, historic buildings lend a lot to the cityscape and should be preserved!).

Whoa, that looks really nice. Wish we get some quality towers like this in LA.
