I like these threads, usually have 'em like once a year

Well Montreal's city hall still hasn't changed since 1878: it barely survived a fire back in the 20's, so what you have here is a 1922 (?) renovation.

http://bp2.blogger.com/_J71zGRkV5UA/...0/IMG_1796.jpg

Some of you may know the infamous separatist war cry: "vive le Quebec libre!" well that mantra was first coined by none other than French President Charles deGaulle on the balcony of city hall (pictured) in 1967...during the expo!

This photograph was taken in 1878, believe it or not, brand new city hall.

The fire of 1922 fucked it up good but here it is in reconstruction in 1922

And here it is today...

Halifax's city hall was built in 1888. It is a fairly nice building, set on a square in the middle of the downtown. Because it's on a hill what you see is actually raised one storey above the street to the right. The bottom floor is made out of granite and there is a small "bridge" leading to the entrance:

Unfortunately some of the other buildings kind of detract from its setting but from the water the roof and tower are interesting:

In practice most municipal offices are in a few office buildings around the city since this building is now way too small.

Cochrane, AB (pop 15k)

Front Entrance:

(Picture from Town of Cochrane website)

The facility was formerly known as the Western Heritage Centre, an ill-fated museum dedicated to preserving the heritage of Alberta's cowboy era. Unfortunately/fortunately the group that was operating the museum ran out of money and the town picked it up in a fire sale from the province about a 6 years ago, along with the park that the centre sits in (the building I believe they paid $1M for, and got the park for $1.00. The building originally cost something like $15M in the mid 90's). The facility now serves as town hall, has most town offices in it, council chambers, plus has a theatre and several banquet halls which are rented out for various functions. The inside is decorated with a number of artifacts from the museum, along with a few new pieces of art that keep with the western theme. The downside to the building is that its virtually inaccessible from the rest of town, theres a single road that leads to it from one highway on the far side of the main townsite.

The old town hall has been used for several movies since they moved to the new building, although it awaits a date with a wrecking ball due to some issues related to structural problems and possibly also asbestos.

City of Vancouver City Hall

Vancouver's art deco City Hall was completed in 1934. The Olympic and Paralympic Games flags are flying in front. The red Potain crane at the right side of the frame is working on the new SkyTrain Canada Line, which runs adjacent City Hall on Cambie Street.

My photo, taken March 11th, 2008.

A rare shot of Vancouver with snow.

My photo, taken January 29th, 2008.

I no longer live here, but the Clinton town hall:

And I can't resist, but right beside it is the town library, possibly as close to being the perfect library possible, and somewhere I visited frequently growing up.

Edmonton's City Hall in Winter at Night, all photos by me:

I thought I had more daytime and summertime photos...will post them if I find them.

ETA: Yeah, sadly all the other photos I have of city hall are really crappy. I really need 1) a better camera, 2) to get out and take more photos, and 3) to get better at taking photos. =P

I wish that Olympic Plaza was always like that. Sadly, it's usually pretty quiet.

I love Edm's city hall, puts Calgary's to shame.

It's busy during the day in the summer, especially at lunch.

It does need work to make it move vital. There is a plan in the works to overhaul the plaza.
