Wow that Sault st. Marie one is awful! I thought that was something people stopped doing like 30 years ago. Now it looks like a cheap commie block made out of shed material. What did it look like before?

That's how they reclad buildings here for the past thirty years, it's horrible.

The bottom of the building on the left is what the whole building looked liked before the reclad.

The Oakland Square Towers in Hamilton are getting new balconies.

Source

Over the past few years, Effort Trust has been installing new balconies with glass railings on a bunch of their buildings in Hamilton. This is the biggest renovation so far.

The condom is even further off the Confed today.

The main lobby - still dark because the windows are covered.

The lobby displays the busts of the three main guys who got us representative government in 1832, as well as all our Prime Ministers beginning with independence in 1855, and finally one Premier - the first, Joey Smallwood.

Here's the first PM (1855-1858):

As the lobby is renovated, these will be moved to the Colonial Building.

Good to see it's finally getting finished. Moving the busts is a good idea, but I hope they don't ruin the mid century modern vibe of the lobby. However, the mural is an exceptionally weird bit of kitsch.

I think they should just line the corridors with lockers and complete the vertical high school look they were obviously going for anyway.

That appears to be a pretty good-sized legislature! ( . . though I can't believe that it is actually still smaller than Saskatchewan's leg building.)

I am waiting for people to be on websites like this in 30 years complaining about how those tacky 10s reclads ruined the historic 1970s architectural stock of their city.

It wouldn't surprise me any... reclads seem to have a shelf life of at best maybe 10 or 20 years before it starts looking like the building would have been better off with its original facade. In some cases the building looks worse after a reclad... a lot of brick veneer walkup apartments in Winnipeg have been given the EIFS treatment and look like crap pretty much from day one.

^ I like the older version of the Jackson building personally. Just seems to have more character and texture.

As far as the TD tower, it's ok. I like that the back now has windows and it's a little taller but overall slightly blander.

Agreed; the old Jackson was a hall of a lot better. As for TD, I much prefer the new design.

A friend of mine obtained a clear photo of this building pre-reclad the other day. Until this I had never actually seen a clear, close up photo of it. Since Google Streetview went by it's been renovated a bit (but doesn't look any different on the outside). It's now a high end restaurant and some condos above. The stone and brick exist under the siding and ugly 70s bricks, but I'm not sure what condition they're in. You can see the original stonework around the door.
