People in Taipei are extraordinarily polite. That's especially true on the metro. I've never been on a metro system where people are so good about lining up and waiting patiently for people to leave a train before getting on. Even in otherwise polite Tokyo, people get really pushy when they're on the train, but not in Taipei.

I get the sense that Taipei is a very relaxed, unfussy city when it comes to things like street vendors, illegal structures and scooters careening everywhere. Those are usually the first things to go when some municipal busybody decides his city needs to be more "modern," yet Taipei seems pretty comfortable with its more scruffy side.
