Great photos! I have two friends who moved to Taipei in August for work and they are having the time of their life in Taiwan. My friends said the people are extraordinarily friendly, the transit system in Taipei is impressive, and there is great mountain biking right outside the city.

What a treat to see my old hometown get the Kilgore Trout treatment. Tremendous shots of a tremendous city!

Now you're talking. Bit ramshackle, eh? But scooters, scooters everywhere. Most scooters of any country in the world. They grow on trees. When I first arrived I was given one. Later I gave it away to someone else.

Scooters in Taiwan are like shoes with wheels that everyone wears, and sometimes you lend them out to people in a pinch.

Also: I think Chunghsiao East Road probably has the highest concentration of beautiful women of anywhere in the world.

Public notices out the wazoo. And I'm sorry but T101 is still a bloody ghastly building.

I can almost smell the street here. Nice work, KT!

Eh? I don't think I noticed a single one in all of the photos. Which one are you referring to?

People in Taipei are extraordinarily polite. That's especially true on the metro. I've never been on a metro system where people are so good about lining up and waiting patiently for people to leave a train before getting on. Even in otherwise polite Tokyo, people get really pushy when they're on the train, but not in Taipei.

I get the sense that Taipei is a very relaxed, unfussy city when it comes to things like street vendors, illegal structures and scooters careening everywhere. Those are usually the first things to go when some municipal busybody decides his city needs to be more "modern," yet Taipei seems pretty comfortable with its more scruffy side.

They sure do love their scooters. How are the winters around there?
