Oh I forgot, this is the time of the year when I come home and the cops hassle me for trying to turn down my street because its closed off for SXSW!!

Which also triggered another memory:

Word to the wise, don't order anything from UPS or FedX that will be delivered during this time if you can help it. I've had troubles in the past, with boxes getting beat up, and lost. Just too much extra work generated by SXSW for the boys at the delivery companies to handle.

Don't you just tell them you live on the street give them ur address and they will let you go through? They are there after all there to make sure your street does not get clogged up with cars and people that are not from your neighborhood.

^ Even worse than that, President and Secretary Clinton visit one of my neighbors pretty often, and always stay at their house. And every time they are visiting they shut down my street which is a long 2.5 mile street that goes up a couple hills and has no other exit. It sucks big time. It is like a 15 min process to come home or leave my house. They have to check my drivers license, and check their sheets and talk to people who I guess make phone calls or something. And if I am just making a quick run to the store down the street they always act like they didn't just see me 10 mins ago, and I have to do the whole thing over again. It is a disaster.

Oh! And even worse is if any friends or family come to visit me while the Clinton's are in Austin visiting my neighbor. They call my house and if for some reason I miss the call they are screwed. And when I do get the call I have to go down there and escort them.

Yikes that is a hassle! I do love the Clintons and I am proud they consider Austin of of their favorite destinations but yea I can see your frustration with that. Seeing as how they come here quietly you would think nobody would be the wiser that they were even here its not like they announce it on the news that they will be in town, they are here quite a lot especially Bill.

It would be cool if they just blocked off all traffic to everywhere downtown. Why limit it to just a few streets! Maybe weekends and weekdays after 6. Otherwise, only cops, fire depart, paramedics, delivery trucks and residents can get thru. Want in, take a bus, train, taxi, bike or hoof it! NO LIMOS's FANCY PANTS!

We don't have enough mass transportation options to handle the amounts of people that will be coming in for SXSW. There is no way they can do that they need to leave some streets partially open. Maybe someday if we get light rail, more express bus lines, High traffic bus lines ect... But until then its not something that can be done.

Yeah! And maybe the ~100,000 or so of us who work downtown could get additional paid time off.

I like this idea. That way we can take that time off and enjoy the South By parties with all the carpetbaggers!

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with this. It has been busy.

There is a day an a half left until we get our wonderful city back, but so far this weeks SXSW has blown away every other. In fact it has been larger than all the rest of the SXSW combined. And each part has been bigger, Social, Music and Film, plus all the others like Style, Education and Environmental.

Latest estimates put the numbers of bands at closer to 3k than 2k. Almost 1k of which were international. Lots of unexpected performers came to town and are playing many shows. Usually 5 or 6 for most bands. It is really amazing. I don't know that there is another city in the world that could do that in an area as small as Austin's Downtown.

In addition to those ~3k bands there have been so many more huge names playing many shows. 50 Cent and Eminem have done multiple shows. Jay-Z did his show plus a party. Bruce Springsteen did a shows plus a amazing keynote (must watch!) and joined Alejandro Escovedo, Ely and Jeffreys for several songs at the Austin Music Awards. Springsteen also crashed and played at two parties that I know of. Jack White has done a whole crapload of shows. Like 6 or 7. Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie have done shows. Fiona Apple did a few shows. Kanye West didn't have a show of his own like last year (that I know of), but made 3 appearances in shows that I know of (and is still in town tonight so we will see). Arcade Fire has done like 4 or 5 shows already. Bill Murray has been all over town doing the crazy shit he does, lol. Norah Jones is in town playing. Lady Gaga was in town, but I don't think she played anywhere. That I know of.

And that is just music. The big splashed and big names in the Film and Interactive are no different. This year has really been a monster so much bigger than anyone could have possibly expected. There have been over 40 billionaires in Austin this week. Many A-List movie stars including (8?) with Academy Awards. A couple ex-American Presidents and a Vice President. Hell one ex-US Vice President (Al Gore) interviewed a guy who founded Napster and Facebook. The top brass from Google, Apple, Samsung, Facebook and well you name it, they were all here.

And thankfully as opposed to all of the riots we had last year, this years biggest controversy has been around Homeless Hotspots that whether they are good or bad they did bring tons of awareness to the homeless problems.

Edit: Right now McConaughey is playing his bongos at a The Cult show on Auditorium Shores. lol.

I avoided downtown until Saturday morning. Went to John Mueller's BBQ and watched Anthony Bourdain's Travel Channel show being taped. Had heard about this yesterday on my favorite Texas sportsboard, so went down there to meet with some fellow ShaggyBevo guys:

Anthony Bourdain (center, with white blue/grey plaid shirt) in line with everybody else -

Cutting meat at the order window:

Bourdain actually paying at the pick-up window:

Bourdain's table next to ours - We had been drinking some free tap beer provided by the place for everybody who showed up until noontime. I took two bottles of Garrison Brothers Texas Bourbon Whiskey and was pouring shots for my Shaggybuds. Had about 3 ounces left in one bottle so I went over to Bourdain's table and placed it next to him saying "Have some good Texas Bourbon whiskey".
He graciously thanked me. You can see the nearly empty bottle to his left ( with the black top cap). He did drink it later:

The table where I was sitting - my gray cooler with 2 lbs of brisket & link of sausage to go on the table corner:

L-R:

Unknown lady, John Mueller, Daniel Vaughn, Anthony Bourdain:

I had a blast at the free shows at Auditorium Shores. To whoever made the bike racks possible, BIG thanks. I locked out right outside the gate and strolled right in. I loved it when the bikes took over the streets after the show.

Matthew McConaughey playing the bongos in Austin at SXSW with the Cult. I was about 30 feet from the stage. I saw the Counting Crows and the Shins the day before also.

Video Link

lol And I saw these guys open for the Cult. They're from Austin.

Video Link

They're a great band to see live.
