Hannibal - Missouri, not Lecter!!!

So I recently took a trip through several Midwest states. I covered a lot of territory and visited about 20 cities. Some are small, others medium sized and bigger. Hope you don't mind putting up with my crummy pics. I ran into fog, rain, snow, and what seemed like constant flooding. All in all a dandy way to spend a vacation.

I'm starting with Hannibal, Missouri for no particular reason. I'll try to keep the comments to a minimum (but you know I have a tough time keeping stuff to myself).

The city is on the Mississippi River and the boyhood home of Mark Twain. There's about 18,000 souls living in the place.

Here''s some more info if you want it:

So let's get on with it:

Looks like a handsome place, but it needs some love...

Thanks for the tour. I had to make a last minute drive from Memphis to Cedar Rapids last year and I considered stopping for an hour or so in Hannibal, but on the way up and on the way back (separated by about 15 hours) I decided to keep on driving.

I've never made it to Hannibal yet. A little more run down then I expected for what I consider a tourist town but still a great tour. Great old building stock there.

Yeah, that's kind of disappointing. Hannibal is the last southern influenced city along the Mississippi - more so than say Ste. Genevieve which is south of St. Louis. When Thundertubs was touring this area a few years ago he astutely detected southern inflections in this area (and in Louisiana, MO). I lived in the southern reaches of this "little dixie" type area when I was in high school - it feels real deal southern at times, you know small town black folk living with small town white folk dynamic...

Nice pictures! There seem to be very little connections to Mark Twain there. I thought that it would be the other way around, with maybe too much Twain stuff.

I notice that the picket fence is adequately white washed.

Thanks for the tour, Ex-Ithacan!

I like Hannibal, MO. It´s nice. I´ve never heard about this city. Curious name.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!
