The only reason this Walmart is being built on the Hamilton side of Fifty Rd. is because Grimsby turned them down when they wanted to build on the Grimsby side of the street. Grimsby's loss is Hamilton's gain when it comes to property taxes.

The long-awaited Winona Crossing development is finally expected to begin construction this spring, but could be without one of its previously-announced anchor tenants.

In an email to Ward 11 councillor Brenda Johnson, Leger Xavier, senior vice-president of PenEquity Realty Corporation, states Walmart will not be part of the project’s first phase and may not join the project at all, pending the outcome of ongoing discussions. Walmart’s apparent departure would make Costco the new anchor tenant, with its proposed 155,500 square-foot store.

Calls made to Xavier by the Stoney Creek News were not returned.

The commercial development, located at the corner of Fifty and South Service roads, was approved for a rezoning application in 2009, but since then PenEquity has sought approvals from the city, the Hamilton Conservation Authority, and the provincial transportation ministry for a required GO Transit station within the development’s footprint.

PenEquity previously hoped to begin construction last fall.

“Further to ongoing discussions with staff we are hopeful that we will be in the ground this spring/summer with Costco, LCBO and a variety of restaurant, retailers and service amenities in support of same....Walmart will not be part of our first phase and they will not likely be part of the project at all (although we continue to have an open dialog with them),” Xavier states in the email.

Johnson met with representatives from Costco and the developer just before Christmas. She said the developer’s goal is to have stores open by this fall. Johnson said residents remain divided on the proposed commercial plaza.

“Half the people do not want it. The other half are saying, ‘Hurry it up, we need it yesterday,” she said.

An Ontario Municipal Board appeal against the development was previously settled.

I like malls too.... especially the way they were in the 80s.... with cinemas, sit down restaurants, video arcades, pet stores, real department stores... and mall rats.

The transit hub being included in the property was negotiated by the city in the approval process for the site. It will eventually be the Fifty Rd. GO station once GO starts to expand it's rail operations towards Niagara. The Southern boundary of the property is the railway right of way.

Sounds good. It will be nice to have GO getting commuters to downtown Hamilton.

Prep work has started on the Centennial Station. They're demolishing the railway bridge and expanding it to allow for GO traffic. They also demolished the old Pine Tree Hotel and Restaurant near the tracks.

West Harbour then Centennial then Fifty Road. Hopefully the last 2 happen sooner rather than later. Train times to Toronto will be pretty long though, going around the Cootes Paradise bend takes quite a bit of time. Would be nice if they could improve the tracks and speed it up.

Site servicing work is well underway at the site of the proposed Winona Crossing development at Fifty and South Service roads.

The development includes Costco as its anchor tenant.

The anticipated completion date for the development has not been announced.

The South Service Road, between Fifty Road and Oriole Avenue, is expected to remain closed until Aug. 31. Vince Mazza Way, between South Service Road and Winona Road, is also closed, with an expected reopening date of May 30.

Along with Costco, other businesses that have been identified by developer PenEquity include RBC, LCBO, Turtle Jacks, Pet Value, Pita Pit and Subway.

The development is expected to cover about 17.37 hectares, with 444,759 square feet of commercial space.

A new Costco Wholesale store – the largest of three area locations – has opened in Stoney Creek.

There were some shoppers lined up early Thursday morning to check out the new store, which is located at 1330 South Service Rd at Winona Road astride the Queen Elizabeth Way.

"With the opening of this new warehouse, we are closer to and can better serve our members who, in the past, needed to travel to our locations in Ancaster, Burlington and even as far as St. Catharines," said Pierre Riel, senior vice-president and general manager for Costco Wholesale Eastern Canada, in a press release.

Here's a look at some fun facts about the new store and Costco in Canada:

Costco Wholesale Stoney Creek

•More than 200 jobs are being created at the new location; half are full-time, half are part-time.

•The average salary is $24 per hour.

•The Stoney Creek store is 154,000 square feet, making it the largest of the three in the area. (Ancaster is about 148,000 square feet and Burlington is about 138,000 square feet).

•The new store has 650 parking spots and 750 shopping carts.
