Folks, remember to only embed one video per post. HTML5 is awesome and all but too many iterations of embedded videos can actually make the videos non-playable on many platforms. Embedded videos are not efficient.

Another Saskatchewan duo called Violent Kin, for what ever reason, reminds me of Kacy and Clayton, i'm not sure why (..it's his hairstyle )

I'm a bit disappointed in the studio version of this song. It's too ambient and breathless. Since seeing it live, it was WAY heavier on the guitar, and clear vocals, and just... more engaging.

Fucking love that song.

As a teen I thought that song was an ironic type of "we're so cool we made it in LA, the land of a million cliches".

However as I entered and passed my mid 20s, the song has totally become "I'm 29 why the fuck am I in a club".

So the last time I gave an update on the Grand Canadian Chansonnier, I realised my sample did not have any proper doping (oversampling.) So with it properly doped and now a sample that is 160 instead of only 120, here we go.

Top 10%

World is Waiting For the Sunrise (Ernest Seitz, 1918) (covered by Les Paul & Mary Ford, Maurice Boulyer, Benny Goodman, Ken Aoki, Willie Nelson, The Beatles)

K-K-K-Katy (1917) (covered by Billy Murray, Mel Blanc)
Put Your Hand in the Hand (Gene McLellan, 1970) (covered by Anne Murray, Ocean, Elvis Presley)
American Woman (Guess Who, 1970) (covered by Lenny Kravitz, Jimi Hendrix)
YYZ (Rush, 1981) (covered by Foo Fighters, Primus)
Prayer Song (Chief Dan George, 1964)
L'Adieu du Soldat (Roland Lebrun, 1942) (covered by Julie Daraïche)

I can't get enough of this new song from Buffy Sainte-Marie featuring Tanya Tagaq. I first heard it Wednesday morning on the radio and I've must have listened to it twenty times since.

This week I'm spotlighting Andy Shauf from Regina.

Having signed with his American label ANTI- in 2015, his album, and Polaris Music Prize nominated The Party, was released in May 2016 along with having toured Europe as an opening act for The Lumineers earlier in that year. He's been nominated 4 times in 2017 Junos next month.

Andy Shauf was the musical guest on Late Night with James Corden last night and his 2017 American & European tour begins this weekend in San Diego.

The Toronto Star likes Amelia's latest. She shared the link on FB so she must appreciate what they had to say.

Video Link

Quote:
Amelia Curran’s latest album, Watershed, carries the most direct message of any she’s released to date — a message that, succinctly put in the St. John’s singer/songwriter’s own terms, boils down to “come together and get over yourselves already, as humans.”

...

“I’m not putting it on, man. Having had enough just feels like it’s part of my personality now,” says Curran over a cup of tea on Queen West during a visit to Toronto last week. “You can’t just be, like, ‘Enough, no more bullsh-- !’ and then everyone goes ‘Okay,’ you know?

“This record is big on theme, and I’ve never had a record big on theme. I’ve certainly talked about the themes of records in the past, but I was lying or making it up because people wanted them to have a theme (when) usually ‘the most recent batch of songs I wrote’ was the theme. This time it’s very clear. Intended or not intended, I really don’t know, but it’s very clear: it’s very clearly an ‘activist’ record.”

...

Last year, too, she wrote and directed an unflinching short documentary entitled Gone inspired by the suicides of two close friends and her own crippling bout with depression and anxiety about a decade ago, a period during her late 20s when she basically laid in bed in her apartment for months on end convinced she was about to die. It aired last September on local CBC in St. John’s, but the network now has designs on airing it nationally this spring.

I'll definitely be picking this one up. It's as mandatory for soulful takes on our folk songs as Joan Morrissey is for comedic, charismatic ones.

Quote:
“Of all the singers you’d hear, she had an element of what I’d call a kind of perfection about her. Absolutely flawless, you know? And it stood out. I’ve never heard of anyone sing like that, so precise. Charisma, she exuded it. And she was dramatic. Haunting, there’s an element of that there,” Brace said.

“It’s mind-blowing how good she was. I’m still really impressed by the talent and her voice is just so unique and powerful and special. To me, it was like you were playing with a goddess. You were on another plane.”

...

The CD of songs recorded in that music room in 1969, simply titled “Laverne Squires” and featuring a stunning black and white photo of Squires on the front, will be released Sunday evening between 7-9 at The Ship in St. John’s. All three of Squires’ daughters will take part; Selina and Dale singing, and Corina hosting the event. There’s no admission cost.

The CD will be available after that at Fred’s Records and O’Brien’s music store.

I've been on a bit of a country music kick this month,
Someone to keep an eye out for is Swift Current, Saskatchewan's Colter Wall.

Teenaged Colter received major USA attention in Country music scene a couple years ago when Hollywood connections got his songs featured in tv's Dog the Bounty Hunter and a couple of his fans that happen to be American pro-wrestlers raved about his music, also Colter's single 'Sleeping on the Blacktop' was featured in Jeff Bridges' and Chris Pine's Best Picture Oscar nominated Hell or High Water movie released last year.

Colter's self-titled debut album produced by Grammy award winning Dave Cobb in Nashville releases this May.

Described by many as the next Johnny Cash, Colter was at Emmylou Harris' Skyville Live Concert in Tennessee a few months ago, & he was featured at SXSW in Austin last month.

It's been a quiet quite while for this thread,
ok.. for some more music..

One of Saskatchewan's vocal treasures, Melanie Hankewich who sings under the name Belle Plaine, has toured from coast to coast with her honey voiced jazzy, folky, honky tonk sound.
Belle Plaine began career singing when overheard while slinging java in coffee shops in Victoria & Australia and working in lighting booths in theatres..
.
.."one of the many lighting designers who said, ‘Do you have a radio on in there, could you shut it off?’ And I’d tell them I was singing, and they’d say, ‘That’s you? Why are you in a booth? You should NOT be in a booth!’,” she says with a laugh."..
http://thechronicleherald.ca/artslif...rairie-to-town

Belle Plaine toured Western Canada last December plus performed with the oldest continueously operating Symphony Orchestra in Canada, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regina_Symphony_Orchestra, for their inaugural 'Candlelight Christmas', as well she teamed up with Blake Burglund at Village Guitar in Saskatoon for one of the best versions of Mercury Blues I've ever heard live recording, & done in only one take.

It's eerie to think that a Saskatchewan singer like Colter Wall was just performing in Manchester earlier this week in light of the Ariana Grande post concert tragedy that happened..

Just thinking of another Saskatchewan artist who does an absolutely amazing cover of Ariana's 'Dangerous Women' is Tenille Arts from Weyburn, Saskatchewan doing the song last year on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J556sFiQ3Xs

But it was her live cover of Train's 'Drops of Jupiter' at Nashville record exec company that caught the attention of producers Adam Wheeler and Matt Rovey in 2015 and launched her musical career.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLOM9sulbzs

My favourite cover of Tenille's is Beyonce's 'Halo'

A few months ago Tenille released her first self-titled debut EP on 19th & Grand Records from Tennessee.
It debuted at #1 on the Top Country Albums chart on iTunes Canada, and has already cracked the top 100 on the U.S. Country Albums chart. Her first song from EP is 'What He's Into'

^^ nobody else seems to care.. judging by how few people post on this thread..
maybe you could just post a video instead of deleting others video links next time

in continuation..

This week i'm spotlighting Val Halla from Regina.

Canada's version of Courtney Love, Val Halla entered the music business in her tender teen years, working with funk and rock groups like Five Alarm Funk (see 2nd video in Andy Shauf post above) and Age of Electric.

She has just released her first of 3 volume album release of A Walk On Part in the War in April of this year & this last month of May she's been touring Ireland and the UK & continuing in Europe.

For her last album & sophomore release No Place she toured America with Ted Nugent
