Indeed, and it's a pretty nice intersection too. Unfortunately I don't have any photos immediately available to share.

Here's Moncton's most imposing church; the Assomption Cathedral, seat of the Moncton diocese. They've recently successfully completed a public fundraising campaign for $4M to do essential repairs on the cathedral. This is not one of the three churches on "churches corner" BTW

It's just that the new Cathedral building is younger.

And more importantly for my point, the place only became a cathedral in 1850.

Our Lady of Mercy - Port au Port West, NL
It took 11 years to build and was completed in 1914 using voluntary labour from the congregation. It was the largest wooden structure in Newfoundland at the time and measure 116 feet to the top of the steeple. All the interior fixtures were made by local craftsmen and artisans while the statues were made of carrara marble and imported from Italy. Today, it's still the largest wooden church in the province and is undergoing a multi-year restoration.

Here you can see it rising above the trees and the rest of the community

I have to say you're very correct in pointing out that St. John's is a serious rival to Halifax for oldest British stuff within Canada's current borders. Though Halifax used to own that category -- before 1949.

One cannot have a serious discussion about church buildings in Canada without mentioning the iconic three churches in Mahone Bay NS.

Yeah.

One odd tidbit: From 1839 to 1925, the Diocese of Newfoundland included Bermuda.

Mahone Bay is cool.

The Moncton one almost feels like an Orthodox Church under construction with that chilly interior. It's nice!

This is just a little church in rural New Brunswick where I grew up outside of Centreville but it is the cutest little church I've ever seen. built in 1876. I love the grand cathedrals and oratories but I also love a tiny little church.

I took this picture today while home for Easter.

The Maritime Conference of the United Church of Canada still includes the Methodists in Bermuda.

I think we should just go all Argentina and bloody well annex the islands.......

In and around Winnipeg continued..

St. Andrews on the Red is the oldest stone church in Western Canada being used as a place of worship. The church was built between 1845 and 1849 and was consecrated on December 19, 1849 by Rev. David Anderson, the first Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Rupert's Land.

St. John’s Anglican Cathedral and Cemetery

St. John’s is the oldest Anglican parish west of the Great Lakes. The graveyard around the massive church contains a veritable “Who’s Who” of Manitoba society from the 1800s through the present

Fantastic thread! My favourite part about visiting family in Boucherville most summers growing up was always seeing the churches. it was like entering another world. To a kid from Calgary where we have nothing even remotely similar it was like seeing Europe. Churches were my gateway drug to skyscrapers.

Serendipity. I've always sworn by it.
I knew where that street view was before even seeing the building as I walked down that street back in October. Instead of getting lost in Westmount driving we got lost in the cemetery driving back on Halloween. That was fun...

Wow, Lace, great post. That must've been a lot of work.

I imagine experts could easily guess where a particular church is from based on the stone used. They seem to be very uniform by region.

A few of my favourite churches on steeper hills in St. John's. I love a graded courtyard wall.

And a couple inside the Basilica.

Down into the crypt.

Some examples of Calgary's limited stock of older churches:

Knox United:

Central United:

Bridgeland's Byzantine Ukrainian Church on the hill:

Grace Presbyterian:

One of my favourite's int he city is First Baptist which is right across the street from Central Memorial park int he Beltline:

This one is interesting as I swear it is made out of cinder block. St. Stephen's Anglican:

St. Mary's Cathedral. I used to go there from my Catholic highschool for masses now and then:

Hillhurst United is actually a customer of mine so I've had the privilege of seeing some of the old inner parts of it.

St. Paul's chapel in Calgary's south is next to Midnapore. It used to be a missionary outpost. There's a second chapel right next to it too. I always loved these.

The other one's decidedly more decrepit:

I love St. Matthew's Lutheran in Bridgeland because the cross on the top lights up in red neon at night.
