This is in Wilno Ontario, a tiny Polish community between Algonquin Park and the Ottawa river. I passed by it on my way to Tamagami 3 summers ago.

Wilno claims to be Canada's first Polish community. The areas population is 14,500. That's what makes the scale of this church so impressive. It's literally in the middle of nowhere.

This is the view from the church, even though the population is 14,500 it's spread over an area larger then the GTA.

St Andrews. Always wondered why this one appears incomplete. Money issues, structural issues? Not sure.

Grace. Wasn't going to post this one but it's actually kind of funky.

Also, there's a bunch of, IMO, quite architecturally-interesting churches from the 1950s and 1960s in Laval. I might share some of those later when I have more time.

A while back lio mentioned "churches corner" (corner of Church Street and Queen Street) here in Moncton NB

I've browsed the internet for photos, and here are the three churches on the corners on the intersection:

First Baptist Church - Moncton

Central United Church - Moncton

This photo is interesting because it shows a sign in front with a rendering of the "Community Peace Centre", which has since been built. The church was having difficulty maintaining itself because of a dwindling congregation, so it formed a partnership with a number of social justice organizations in the city to build an adjacent office building where all these organizations would rent space. The building also contains a large daycare space, and the sanctuary of the church (renowned for it's acoustics) is now rented out regularly for various recitals and small performances. The two buildings are firmly interconnected to one another and the church has been saved.

This picture shows the adjacent Peace Centre:

Saint Georges Anglican Church - Moncton

Owen Sound has an intersection like that with four churches, dubbed Salvation Corner.

Amusingly, two blocks down the street was Damnation Corner, which once had four hotels that provided "local entertainment".

I think you miss the point of much Church of Rome architecture for four centuries until recent times - making every effort to be awe inspiring was quite intentional.

The interior of the Oratory has some serious fascist architecture traits.

Thanks for starting this thread Martin Mtl. When you consider how much effort, craftsmanship and money went into building churches, it's surprising we haven't had a thread focusing on them.

Also, until perhaps the 1920's, churches and church spires were the tallest buildings in the country.

Speaking of the Notre-Dame Basicilia in Montreal, the Place d'Armes in front of the church has got to be the nicest square/plaza out of any city in Canada. Great architecture all around the place. Maybe that could be a good thread to start "Great Canadian Squares and Plazas."

Erskine and American United (downtown, Montreal)
Build in 1893

This church was integrated to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and it serves today as concert hall.

Famous for its Tiffany stained glass, dating from 1893–94. I was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1998

My God, we can't turn all these churches into museums and auction houses. Slowly but surely, one by one they'll be turned into condos like the one in little-italy.

Fine by me.

Thats quite the church Trois-Pistoles has got there.

I wonder if Quebec has the most churches per capita anywhere in the world. Definitely feels like it.

No kidding. Trois-Pistoles: pop: 3,400.

That church fits more people than the entire goddamn town.
