All depends on what day you're up there, and of course the snow and the coastal mountains vs Whistler can be completely different. The powder can get decent (though not as good as interior) on city mountains, but on days near 0, which there are plenty of, it can be heavy. You just need to time it right.

At Whistler you can usually get high enough to find some good powder unless you're early or late in the season which is to be expected. The powder there still isn't as fluffy as the interior, but you're also less likely to be skiing in anything below -10, so there's a tradeoff.

Went for a day at Silver Star (Vernon, 45 minutes north of Kelowna, about 5 1/2 hours from Spokane) with my SO on the weekend; great mountain! About 5cm of fresh power fell while where were there, good variety of runs, cozy mountain restaurant, and hardly anyone there (by coastal standards). Would highly recommend for those visiting the interior.

So I just wrapped up my first of two days at Whitewater, which is about 20 min from Nelson. What a place! My god, did we have fun. There are no high speed lift lines, but it doesn't matter because there are so few people here that after about 11am we didn't have to wait once in a line. The snow was so deep that it was actually tiring.

It was my first experience boarding in wet snow, which takes some getting used to (the temperature was about -2). But man, if you love glades or just great powder, I think it would be quite hard to been Whitewater.

We were thinking to spend the first day at Whitewater and the second at Red Mountain near Rossland, but with conditions this good we don't dare risk it! Plus, Nelson is a really hip little mountain town. I was watching in the parking lot and there were a lot of plates from Washington and Idaho, as well as a couple from Oregon, Manitoba and Ontario. Tons from Alberta. I guess a bunch of people probably drive up from Spokane like we did. Would be great if in future there was a convenient place to fly into in Canada...we lose out on some tourism $$ by having tourists like us rent our car and pay our airport taxes in Wash state rather than BC.

On another note, there was an article in the Kootenay Mountain Culture mag in my hotel room about a new project that is being scoped out for West of Jasper in Valemount. Sounds incredible. They had some interesting stats like how Calgary has 11 sizeable resorts within a 5 hour drive, whereas Edmonton only has 1 (Marmot basin). Do people think it would draw an adequate number of Edmontonians to make it viable?

I'd love to check it out if it's built, but in the meantime I'm realizing just how much more exploring of interior BC ski resorts I have to do...

Welcome to my part of the world!
You can fly in from Calgary (or Vancouver) daily on Air Canada Express. Yes, we are famous for flight cancellations but once youre here you wont wanna leave anyways haha! Glad you had a blast. From here Red Mountain is around 30 minutes and Whitewater 45 minutes. Just stay here and do both. Cheers!

This rumour has been banded about for years now. I know people that bought in Valmont 15 years ago based on this rumour. However if and when it gets done it would be a great circle route. Marmot Valemont, sunpeaks, then back through Revelstoke, Golden and Banff.

So, I just followed 2 1/2 days skiing in AB with night skiing at Cypress. Wow!

Powder at Nakiska, Louise and Sunshine. Real powder. Fluffy, light and in some cases thigh deep.

And while night skiing is fun, it felt like I was pushing around wet concrete last night. Still lots of snow at Cypress, but wow was it heavy.

AB hills are in peak form so get out there and ski. My AB season is now over , so it's only BC and QC.

At both Louise (Sat) and Sunshine (Sun) this past weekend I met many skiers from Edmonton. I'm always surprised at how many people make the trek south instead of west - obviously for many different reasons, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're the second largest source for the Banff resorts.

And yes, Calgarians are spoiled!

Banff and Jasper are the same distance from Edmonton. 3:45 to Jasper and 3:47 to Banff if you go the speed limit, most people have no problem making it in jus over 3hrs. Lake Louis is 4:20 and marmot is 4:10.

We, that's it for QC for this season for me.

Just spent 3 days skiing mainly in the rain - 2 at Tremblant and 1 at MSM. While there is still a decent base out there, the rain is just melting so much snow that way too many runs are closed. Basically anything natural and steep.

Oh well, back to Vancouver tonight and then 3 days at Whistler this weekend. Though they too are getting lots of precipitation, at least you can get high enough to where it's snow.

Not sure how many resorts will make it to Easter this year.

Ever wonder how chairlifts are designed safely? Well, you gotta figure out the breaking point right?

The fun really starts at 4:25 ... https://youtu.be/u4WPSZojtyE

Getting close to ending another season. Last weekend was QC, this one was 3 days at Whistler. Friday was a good day, while Sat/Sun were great days. 30/40 cms of fresh dry powder on Saturday in upper Blackcomb - just no viability. Sunday had great skies (early on) on only 10/15 of fresh powder. A great weekend overall.

Some powder still in Blackcomb Glacier at noon:

Yesterday was Opening Day at Whistler. Here's the latest Whistler movie (with gratuitous amounts of ski porn) to kick off the new season:

Never ridden there (except on a mountain bike), one day I'll make it out that far. Lots of snow in the Rockies to keep me occupied for a long time though, been an epic season so far.
