I asked the same thing earlier and still have no idea. Possibly for roof lighting or to put their signature "M" on top of it? seems a bit elaborate for a small project, so I suspect it's for somthing on the big scall. Thank you Harry as always for the detail pictures. Does anyone know if they are still planning on lighting the curves of the roof of the Wintrust arena as it looked in the early stage pictures?

SolarWind and Harry, thank you for the incredible construction photo output!

Regarding the Rubenstein Forum and how it relates to the new U of C-area hotel, you can see the previous design about a block away from this proposed hotel. This area is sure getting some nice verticality:

The scaffolding is there to aid in installing the top two floors of glass. Apparently there was an error on the part of the curtainwall manufacturer that didn't take into account that the tower crane would no longer be available when double height curtainwall panels were manufactured instead of more manageable single modules. This was their next best solution to complete the install.

Is that the Michigan Avenue site that steely Dan told us not to get to excited about?

If so, Helll Yeah! I'd love more height but I love the open glass lobby. It would really brighten up Mich Ave.

Did MILA and the original essex drawing have a baby?

Spyguy does it again!

I don't think that's a lobby. I think that is retail space for an Apple-ish company. Why would you waste Mich Ave frontage on such a huge lobby? You gotta go retail

Yeah, my first thought on seeing this was that it was designed to showcase the space for Microsoft. With Apple building their signature space in Pioneer Court, the Microsoft Store needs to move out of the Nordstrom mall lobby and into a real space. The surface line now includes tablets, a desktop, and a laptop all comparable or superior to their Apple competition. They need a proper storefront along Michigan Avenue to showcase the line to the Midwesterners.

Another thought about this design: When you are surrounded by beautiful buildings - the Carbon and Carbide, Jewelers Building, London House, etc. - the most flattering thing to do is serve as a reflecting background. As I stated previously, at 475 feet tall, you'll still be able to se Aqua and Vista towering above this. I think it will fit in beautifully in that space.

SpyGuy, are there any renders of this looking from the west along the river?
