New York City continues to prove why it's superior over the rest. Slay, King.

Google Seizes 500K Square Feet in Los Angeles

Quote:
Google will rent almost the entire former Westside Pavilion mall being redeveloped by Hudson Pacific Properties in partnership with Macerich, Hudson announced in a release today. The tech giant signed a 14-year lease to occupy 584,000 square feet of the complex, which will be called One Westside, upon the completion of construction and tenant upgrades in 2022.

Google’s foray to the Southland began with the acquisition of Santa Monica-based Applied Semantics, when it only had a dozen or so employees, as The Los Angeles Times reported. The tech giant’s presence has continued to grow in the region, with the company leasing 100,000 square feet of space in Venice and just moved into a revamped 450,000 square feet of space at the “Spruce Goose” hanger in Playa Vista this fall.
Who needs Amazon HQ2? The amount of FAANG companies expanding almost exclusively into large cities shows how incentives are a race to the bottom when it comes to tech.

All NYC had to do was dig their heels in and not offer incentives but Cuomo is a total moron.

And Amazon recently announced it’s taking half a million square feet of space in LA too, a city with an anti-business reputation and no tax incentives. Leaves you wondering if NYC just offered billions to secure an expansion of something that was already inevitable.

That being said, this is really petty:

Seattle City Council Members Visit New York to Warn About Amazon HQ2

Like a bitter ex girlfriend who tries to sabotage your future relationships.

NY and crystal city got played, there's no doubt about it. They'll probably expand in all their regional offices too.

BTW I doubt Seattle is bitter, most are probably relieved. And you can't expect a company that size to remain a presence in only one city.

Speaking as a Seattle general contractor that builds this sort of thing, the general feeling among the local A/E/C/RE industry is probably "good, they're still growing here." Amazon has millions of square feet of construction underway, including at least one groundbreaking in the past couple months, and there are rumors of new expansions planned in Downtown Bellevue where they already have a sizable presence. Meanwhile every other major tech is going nuts growing here. Office construction is slowing but groundbreakings have continued.

The two councilmembers are critics of Amazon. It's no surprise that they'll taking that show to to the new location(s).

Bonus that it's only a 5-6-minute walk from the Expo Line's Westwood station. I'd love to be a homeowner in that little area nestled between Pico and Exposition right about now.

And another bonus that it's taking over an outdated shopping mall. Nothing says 1980s Los Angeles like the Westside Pavilion.

This is standard practice. Just local politicians trying to vacation in NYC on taxpayer's dime. NYC and Vegas get a lot of those types coming in for "learning experiences", "conferences", and whatnot.
