Among the towering giants and behemoth cavern currently under construction at the World Trade Center site, it can be easy to overlook the Entry Pavilion of the National September 11 Memorial Museum. After all, it is only three stories high and contains a mere 47,000 square feet, much of which is mechanical equipment. However, the little pavilion serves vital roles in the master plan, both functional as well as aesthetic. For one, it houses the entrance to the museum—a grand stair that descends beneath the recently-opened plaza beside two of the soaring steel “tridents” salvaged from the wreckage of the original twin towers. The building also contains an advanced security apparatus for screening visitors, an auditorium, the aforementioned mechanical equipment, and a special room reserved for World Trade Center attack survivors and the family members of those who lost their lives.

As with every other piece of the massive construction project, the pavilion is also far more complex than a cursory examination of its architectural renderings makes it seem......The majority of the pavilion rests atop the Path Station, specifically atop three massive north-south oriented steel girders, each between 13 and 16 feet deep, which were designed by Port Authority engineers. Only the western tip of the building, which contains the grand stair, sits on the concrete mat of the memorial museum, designed by Aedas and Cantor Seinuk..........

PA chief blowing bucks on G. Zero

The audit, ordered by Gov. Cuomo, found Ward engaged in “extravagant overspending” after he was named head of the bi-state agency by then-Gov. David Paterson in May 2008 in an effort to step up the rebuilding in time for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a source close to the Cuomo administration told The Post.

“There is no doubt Ward got a lot of the construction going, and that he has a network of people he’s pleased as a result, but at what cost?” the source said.

The economics of this are going to be terrible for New York for decades to come as the bills keep coming in.' - A source, on Ground Zero spending by PA chief Chris Ward

“But you can’t credit Ward with accelerating the construction without holding him liable for the bill.

A second source said Ward was “more concerned about what Mayor Bloomberg thought of the reconstruction timetable than he was about the cost to the state he was supposed to be working for.”

Cuomo plans to replace Ward within the next few weeks.

While Cuomo’s deputy secretary for economic development, Patrick Foy, is widely seen as the leading contender, an administration source insisted that others were still under consideration.

The PA audit is expected to be made public within the next few weeks.

I went to the memorial on the Open House New York Tour given by an architect at Handel Architects. Some interesting info:

I asked how the museum would be open and accessible this time next year. Its not his project but said it was a good question as greenwich st won't be finished until 2013 and the unfinished part of the memorial above the Path mezzanine may not be finished in time for the museum opening. !!

When errors were found in the name parapet (one error and one requested name change for a victim who was newlywed whose name wasn't changed on the death certificate.) they spot weld the new name into place rather than replace the whole panel.

The reason they went with the weir design of the multiple cords of water rather than a single continuous sheet is that such a design actually isn't that seamless. It often falls over the edge in strange spurts. (you can see this effect in the inner void). It also cuts the amount of water usage in half.

The parapet metal is coated with three layers of wax (1 black and 2 clear) that gives the metal its matte finish. It also helps to prevent scuffs.

Arad didn't want the museum pavillion to be on the site originally but there are large ventilation structures for the path station that can't be relocated. Therefore, 60% of the pavillion is actually for Path ventilation.

The new Manitowoc crane is up and ready for duty in the South Bathtub! Now, is this the same crane that heralded in the above-grade steel construction, specifically the super columns, for 1WTC? (It sure looks like the same machine).

Just found these forums and first time posting here. Already see a familiar face here (Gary Duanier) who I followed the construction of Citi Field with from 2006-2009. Lots of great stuff here and happy to find a new forum to occupy part of my day...

Was at the Memorial on 9/12/11 for the public opening and won't bore everyone with all my pictures; pretty sure you've all seen similar shots by now.

I will, however, share one image I captured that evening that I loved...The silhouette of 1 WTC reflected on the Pavilion facade and rising around the tridents.

Mean looking construction site for such a nice development! That first pic could become famous some day, with a nearly symmetrical split between completed and under-construction.

For some reason, the pools are dark this evening...

Is This the End of the World Financial Center as We Know It?
First Phase of Brookfield's Quarter-Billion-Dollar WFC Renovation to Begin in November

Quote:
Come November, all the stores and restaurants in the hallway that connects the Liberty Street entrance of Two World Financial Center (WFC) to the Winter Garden will close. The same fate awaits all the establishments in the second-floor corridor above. Brookfield Properties is set to begin its $250-million renovation of the World Financial Center, beginning with the construction of a new second-floor dining terrace facing the Esplanade, along with a food marketplace where the first-floor corridor is now. The work is scheduled to finish in spring, 2013. Between now and the project's completion, Brookfield anticipate occasional closures of the first-floor hallway, as well as the elevators/escalators that provide access to the second floor.

As of September 28, Godiva, Ciao Bella Gelato and Gap have closed, and Hallmark has relocated to the Mezzanine Level (next to Ann Taylor).

Brookfield plans to begin a second phase of this project, which will entail substantial renovation of the Winter Garden and other retail areas of the WFC, next spring. The Winter Garden remodeling is expected to be complete by summer, 2013, while the retail renovation is targeted for completion by fall, 2014.
