Does it look familiar to any of you railroad fans?

Thanks for the link to Barney Oldfield's Race for Life odinthor.
Methinks the Inglewood train station was often used for shoots . . .

Nuclear Escape Route

Thanks for posting the videos Krell58. I had my rumors mixed up.

Here's more on the Cold War Project.

March 19, 1980
latimes

Los Angeles County road worker Bill Netzley opens gate barring vehicles from damaged final miles of Shoemaker Canyon Road.

"Cold War era leaders determined Los Angeles residents needed an escape
route through the San Gabriel Mountains in case of a nuclear attack.
Construction work began on Shoemaker Canyon Road. The 25-mile escape route
would have connected the San Gabriel East Fork Road with Largo Vista in the Mojave Desert.

Work started in 1956, but only four miles was finished. Construction officially stopped in 1969.

When first under construction in 1956, this highway pointed to Largo Vista and the Mojave Desert and was blueprinted
in part as a Civil Defense escape from fallout; one route among a spider-work of exits in all directions should Los Angeles
be threatened, even executed by an atomic attack."

All from L.A. Times March 31, 1980

It is also known as Convict Road. Why?, because the Los Angeles County Road Department utilized prison labor.

One source says the inmates were from Chino Prison while another says the prisoners were from Detention Camp 14. (?) whatever that means.

(maybe Detention Camp 14 is what it was designated once they were in the canyon )

I think the depot is also seen in the classic Buster Keaton film "One Week" (1920).

It never crossed my mind where photographers buy the skimpy clothes for their models...

that is, until I happened upon this pin-up calendar.

MAUREEN
of Hollywood

ebay

Here's a photograph of Maureen's shop when it was at 128 S. Alvarado.

moh

The snazzy design on the big door appears to be cut-out wooden letters.

By 1973 Maureen had moved her saucy outfits to 1308 Wilton Place.

to this very nice looking building on the northeast corner of Fountain Ave. and Wilton Pl.

gsv

#1308 is the small storefront with the black awning and logo on Wilton-

And don't forget Jeffries Barn at Buena Vista Avenue and Victory Boulevard in Burbank. We used to go there Thursday nights for boxing. Dirt floors and beer served in wax cups.

Thanks for the video, photos and information on this project, Krell58 and e_r. It reminded me of Panic in Year Zero! from 1962.

Oddly, when I hear Atomic and San Gabriel mountains, I think of the scene in "War of the Worlds" where the flying wing drops the bomb on the Martians as Los Angeles citizens take cover in the foothills.

Before there was Clint Walker, there was Jim Jeffries...

Here's one instance when using the search box here actually produces something-- "Jeffries" brings up many posts, all the way back to October 2011....

It appears that Camp 14 in still in operation as a joint effort between the Los Angeles County Department of Corrections and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is located on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Santa Clarita.

I appreciate the information HG. So the inmates were paid a small amount, right? (I've never been a fan of slave labor

I checked out the camp oldstuff. thanks for the location.

gsv

There are some ruins over on the right near where it says Baird Canyon------->

a closer look

detail

I've looked at this from all directions and can't figure out what used to be there. -& are the white rocks (I think they're rocks) trying to spell something out?

The road leading to the ruins is chained off.

gsv/detail

Is anyone familiar with this area.....or have an idea what this place used to be?

ER,
I drive San Francisquito Canyon almost every day. The ruins of the old dam that collapsed are in the area, but I'm not sure if the dam was close to Baird Canyon.

I watched 'Panic in the Year Zero' fairly recently FW. I think it's a pretty good film.

You might already know this. 'Panic' was based on 'LOT' by Ward Moore.

EXB

Moore’s story served as uncredited source material for scenarist Jay Simms.

Another Ward novel that takes place in California is 'Cloud By Day'; about a brush fire that threatens a town in Topanga Canyon.

And here's one odinthor might like.. 'Greener Than You Think'.

It's about unstoppable Bermuda Grass.

I kid you not.
__

"Greener Than You Think" posits a world with Bermuda grass running out of control --
choking out every other plant and destroying the food supply of animals and humanity alike."

just saw this vintage kodachrome slide on ebay

ebay

"1950s BEVERLY HILLS LOS ANGELES California - slides Id#1", that's not much of a description
but you can clearly see it's Romanoff's on Rodeo Drive.

The "white rocks" I suspect is a bee yard.

Looked at Historic Aerials, but couldn't make out what the site was. I've hiked the area just to the southwest, but never been to this one. Bee Canyon is just to the east, so perhaps that's a clue to solving "white rocks?" BTW, the LA Aqueduct siphon traverses Bee Canyon, then tunnels southwest through the ridge parallel to San Francisquito Canyon Road to Drinkwater reservoir and powerhouse II. In this immediate area, there are four tunnel audits, and the remains of the "Hogback" aqueduct construction camp, circa 1912 (fun place to relic hunt).
