Kilgore your pics are making me homesick. I'm on the eastcoast right now and just left Montreal yesterday, and in Jersey. Btw Montreal is stunning,I only spent 3 nights there but had an awesome time. I will definitely go back. I'll post an eastcoast mega thread when I get home.

Great photos! I miss Van.
RE: the building with the tree--awesome design, but it also evokes a hypodermic needle with the syringe almost completely pushed in, as the bottom of that columns tapers where the door is. I guess that's Vancouver, too!

that's a neat story about the tree on top of that highrise. But I gotta wonder, if trees were originally that tall when discovered by George Vancouver, then surely there are at least some remaining, right?

Alas, only some of their stumps survive.

Practically everywhere surrounding Vancouver was logged to the ground back in the 19th century.

Mr. Trout, you are a freakin' institution on here. Hats off to another sweet round. As usual, great composition, lovely colours, and gorgeous people shots.

Our ancestors cut them all down. A handful of very old trees in Stanley Park survived the logging largely because it became a protected military base quite early in the city's history. One of these very old trees died of natural causes several weeks ago. It was approximately 1,000 years old.

Yeah some of these trees can reach 100m in height(the new tallest building will be 196m surpassing the second tallest of 150m). ^^The old tree in stanley park that died was 40m in height after the city pruned it due to safety reasons so the original height was significantly taller. While another huge hollow stump in stanley park has a circumference over 18m so you can just imagine the size off some of these old growths trees. Sometimes I wonder what Vancouver would of looked like if it had some of these giants still standing among the condo towers, in many cases overshadowing the condo towers. Heres a cool site that shows a park on Vancouver island that is full of the old growth trees. http://virtualguidebooks.com/BC/Vict...allest_FS.html

Vancouver cannot be captured but you did as good a job as any in trying. It's simply too diverse and too surprising. For every bland condo tower you'll find an unexpected SRO hotel. Or for every high-end boutique, a fabulous hole-in-the-wall eatery. Maybe one day it will iron out itself out. I hope and pray that never happens.

It's a type of fried pork usually served on ceremonial occasions. I don't know the name of the dish, though.

Something like this I think...

I believe somebody posted this same pic awhile back when the same question came up regarding the same sign in another photo thread.

Great pics, Ive never seen the streetlife of Vancouver captured like that before.

FYI if ever in Vancouver and you want to see some really old growth trees that will blow you away go to Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver (About a 20 minute drive from downtown). It is one of the only remaining swaths of first growth forests in the area and the scope is truly incredible.... The lighthouse aint bad either

they are sporadic around the west coast. close to home i have some 250 foot trees nearby, and by the highway there used to be a 300 foot tree that was struck by lightning, then it rotted and got blown over in the December windstorm last year. One tree was rumoured to be measured up Howe sound at over 120 meters, and a few more around 100meters. But since they was cut down, it never made it into the record books. There are some nature reserves around Vancouver with trees that are 200-300 years old, but non are the age, height, and girth of the really old trees... it'll take about 500 years for trees of that magnitude to develop again.
