If the businesses operating on Kensington street relocated 5 blocks south to 8th avenue we wouldn't be talking about how Downtown West is "how not to design an urban neighbourhood".
Mixed-use developments such as West Village towers, where you add another 1,000 residents on that block, an anchor grocer to draw people in from not only the neighborhood, but surrounding areas as well, and adjacent retail that will benefit from the increased traffic.

Adding a couple little interesting stand alone shops in a few different podiums won't be enough to draw people in when you have Kensington to the north and Beltline to the south.

So then is West End doomed for eternity for being an urban wasteland?

I voted 'like it' but I'm close to loving it. Overall it's a great project, just not quite in love with it. Between, this, Mark and the two Aura towers 8th street is really going places. Great time to get that underpass done.

Looked like they were setting up some sort of elaborate base for a mobile crane to set up the tower cranes.

Second thought I believe this is a base for a permanent mobile crane, and they'll likely supplement with one tower crane.

Lots of residential tower action. The whole downtown core of going to see some dramatic changes over the next couple of years.

New forms being poured across the entire two tower footprint now. This western section of the Beltline is really starting to take on a new feel with a bunch of new towers rising.

Once you really notice this one rising, we'll also have a crane being set up at 6th and 10, and by the time both Place Ten and 6th and 10 start to rise, this one will be halfway up or more with Mark topped out! Very exciting times still.

The three storey podium is nearly complete for the entire site. 4th floor column pouring mostly complete for the west tower.

Are both the West and East towers rising simultaneously?

looks like it. Can't say for sure though cause the east side is just finishing the third floor podium now. One more floor and 100% going up at the same time.
