Exactly. This is how 181 Fremont and Salesforce Tower are right now.

The curtain wall system of this tower will be unlike any other in SF, quite the contrast to the ubiquitous sheer glass walls, a creative stroke by SOM. I'm looking forward to its unique presence on the skyline.

One thing I have learned over the years is to not judge a building too soon, or from photos alone. Looking at an unfinished building is like looking at a messy bedroom, the mess will always distract from the qualities of the room itself. I can see this being built outside the window, and it looks absolutely amazing during the pink sunsets we have been having. The white grid panels look different depending on how the sun is hitting them, already completely altering the appearance based on your location and the time of year/day.

It seems like the stacked blocked effect won't be as striking as it was in the renders.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. It’s similar to the ultimate result with Linea, at Market and Buchanan, in comparison with its renderings that was much discussed here at that time.

I think when the next section is complete it will be easier to judge. The only full “blocks” we have now aren’t a great representation due to the fact that their bottoms are partially obscured by the podium.

Also, the white horizontal bands haven’t been added at the tops and bottoms of the window recesses, as is shown in the renders.
