Plane stowaway's body lands feet from man sunbathing in his London garden

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/201...e-fallen-plane

Quote:
.....

- Police were called to an address in Clapham, south London, by shocked residents at 3.39pm on Sunday. Officers believe the body to be that of a male and he is understood to have fallen from the landing gear of a Kenya Airways flight as it prepared to land at Heathrow Airport. — A local resident said: "I heard a 'whomp' - I went upstairs to look out of a window. At first, I thought it was a tramp asleep in the garden. "He had all of his clothes on and everything. I had a closer look and saw there was blood all over the walls of the garden.

- "I realised immediately that he had fallen. So I went outside and it was just then the neighbour came out and he was very shaken." The neighbour, who asked not to be named, said that a plane spotter, who had been following the flight on a tracking app from Clapham Common, had seen the body fall. — Describing the victim, he said: "One of the reasons his body was so intact was because it was an ice block." He added: "The investigation is with Nairobi Airport. If someone can climb up into the wheel arch then someone can put up a bomb up there and let it off over London."

The stowaway at that altitude obviously didn’t consider that the temperature drops to almost -100F at that kind of altitude. Including over Africa.

Autonomous Shuttles Begin Passenger Service in Montréal

https://nextcity.org/daily/entry/aut...rvice-montreal

Quote:
.....

- Mass Transit reports that Canada’s first autonomous passenger shuttle service has launched in Montréal on a trial basis. The service is the result of an ongoing test project run by a partnership of Transdev Canada and the city of Montréal. Two EasyMile EZ10 shuttles will operate between Maisonneuve Market and the Olympic Stadium through Aug. 4. The 12-passenger vehicles will operate on the 1.4-km (0.87-mile) route at an average speed of 15 km/h (9.3 mph), taking six minutes to complete a trip in one direction. Even though the vehicles will run by themselves and are equipped with GPS, cameras and LIDAR to detect obstacles, the minibuses will have operators on board to take control should the situation require it. In addition, traffic signals along the route have been equipped with systems that communicate with the shuttles to give them priority.

Woman 'boards' airport conveyor belt, apparently thinking it'll take her to plane

https://www.foxnews.com/travel/woman...elt-take-plane

Quote:
.....

- The first-time flyer checked in her bags at Istanbul Aiport, but instead of heading to her terminal, she proceeded to climb onto the conveyor belt as terminal attendants and other passengers looked on. — The woman stepped onto the belt and promptly fell onto her backside as it rolled forward. Confused airport staff jumped up to help her before she ended up in a pile of checked luggage aboard the cargo carrier, but the woman said she thought the conveyor belt would conveniently transport her to the aircraft.

Not a bad idea. But did the woman have no awareness of her surroundings? Did she not notice no-one else doing so? Had she never seen anyone in a movie/tv/... at an airport?
Something more to the story there.

Man that's cringeworthy, I feel sorry for the lady. I guess some people have to learn the hard way?

If this were to have occurred in a US airport, I'd actually not be shocked at all....

So, below is only a little gadget for fun, no option for real transit, but anyway...

We've probably all heard of this iron man fantasy of people more or less flying by their own means. It looks like a former jet ski champion from Marseille found an interesting solution. A standalone platform allowing him to fly, sort of like iron man for real.
There he was showing it off in Florida.

Video Link

His name is Franky Zapata, definitely an awesome self-educated inventor and his gear is called 'flyboard'.
He would've designed it on his own with some financial help from the French military that funded his effort. That costed €1.3 million from them; maybe not too much given the convincing outcome.

His machine was on display for the July 14 military parade over here. I'm hardly astonished that the military would be interested...
Notice it could be helpful to firefighters too, somehow.

^ He is Green Goblin, guys. Not Ironman.
His thing is more like this.

Except the guy means no harm at all to you.

It's fascinating cause it actually works, like it's usable already.
This is the most realistic gear of this type I've seen so far. Idk how much would cost a unit for now. Maybe €300k, whatever overpriced.
But it's a good idea that should gradually go cheaper as it is being developed.

This may have been posted before in the thread, but I just got back from Medellin and experienced their transit system. Cable cars & escalators operate quite well as neighborhood-commute options for steeply-inclined locales.

Given my city's hilly terrain, I wish the City of Birmingham would look in to cable cars that could provide rapid transit efficiently to what would likely be a lower ridership.

The great thing about our urban area is that our road arteries all lead to our secondary urban cores. Having cable cars following the ROW of the road arteries could easily avoid indadvertant views of private property, and therefore avoid NIMBYs.

Sadly, this makes too makes sense.

Guess we'll see how our new BRT line works out.
