I went over to Parq before dinner in the early evening last night. Impressive casino for Vancouver standards. I have to say this is the first place that actually reminds me of Vegas, instead of some depressing dump full of degenerate gamblers.

The craps table had a $5 minimum going so that kept me there almost 2 hours. I may in fact become a degenerate gambler myself at this rate...

Anyway, looked like a great building, although when it's busy the casino floor still felt a bit cramped. I'm guessing that's by design but I'm not sure why. They will certainly have to blow out some walls if they ever get permission to put more tables and/or machines in there.

The entrance off Expo is a bit crowded. With One Pacific there as well, I'm not sure how that will work when both hotels and all restaurants are open. It will be a big traffic jam.

^^ and imagine the viaducts gone, the Arc completed, all retail shops opened, and the Plaza of Nations site redeveloped.

Currently, only a low capacity translink shuttle bus serves the route. They need to improve on that.

It should be a streetcar station for sure, but more importantly those properties should have access from the northwest side as well. The parkade and lobby area should have an entrance/exit on both sides.

So long as there's something. More density + no viaducts + no rapid transit = chaos. Not sure if City Hall realizes that.

There is actually access from the other side (Expo), but it only appears to be parking, no valet or taxi drop off. Hard to tell as it still isn't open yet either.

oprah was there last week :O

an article" http://montecristomagazine.com/business/parq-vancouver

For most hotels, a soft launch means a quiet one. It means friends and family, community members—you know, low-profile folks.

For Parq Vancouver, though, a soft launch meant Steven Tyler. Oprah Winfrey. Jay Leno. Reba McEntire.

As a sponsor for the David Foster Foundation’s 30th Annual Miracle Gala & Concert, the brand-new hotel complex—made up of the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver and Autograph Collection’s The Douglas—played host to the event’s visiting talent. A grand entrance, indeed.
nice room

It may not be the most comfort inspiring message in the world, but at least the doors are now labeled. I grabbed this as I was rushing past on October 14th.

Weird that they call it BC Place when it's not BC Place.

Also what do they do when they have those doors open? Cover it with a sign?

it could mean that "run this way from BC Place to get away from it". as in you run through those doors into the casino to get away from BC Place. that is what it kind of reads like.

i cant remember if there is a door at BC Place that would line up with that door on the casino.

Yes there is. And yeah it I'd the emergency route for the stadium. I wish they just enclosed that area instead

If they enclosed it BC place goers would lose a route to Beatty street and/or casino crowd control would be a shitshow.

How so? As is, they have a set of doors to exit BC place. If they enclosed it they just move those doors, or have two sets. So the podium of the casino butts up against bc place and at ground level they have the gate entrance

From a casino perspective it would be a nightmare to id/keep kids out/check bags. If people actually knew the rules it would be fine.

Those doors and signs look like something done to meet the bare minimum of code. In a true emergency, they are very confusing and are exactly the type of thing that would be looked at post-disaster as a major issue, and cause a code change.

Nah, from inside the casino it's probably the most overbuilt emergency exit I've ever seen.

The signs are just to stop people from trying to enter that way.

BCPlace has a major entry/exit right there. The required width of the egress route has been pinched by the casino such that it is too narrow. Thus, the design of the casino was required to incorporate a sufficiently wide egress route to compensate. It's not minimum effort to code (though it's 99% likely built to the code minimum) and its not overbuilt. The code requirements for proper evacuation of the stadium at maximum capacity simply govern the egress design. Get used to these kinds of oddities as we build denser and more complex urban fabric.

OK I meant it's overbuilt for the casino. If it's meant to be for the stadium too that makes more sense (though it would be insane to try to go through the casino in a panic).

As mentioned before, that really should be a public entrance to the Casino.
I suspect that it would be the City that has somehow blocked it - since a direct entrance would be a cash cow for the Casino and restaurants inside.
