Who said anything about conforming? It's just a nagging bother that there will be a 1-5 and a 7, but no 6. If they want to make the PAC #6, the memorial #8, and the hotdog stand next to Tower 4 #9, that's all good with me.

It was never a good idea for that to be its official title - after all, it's just an office tower, not a monument or a building with a special function - but people can still call it that who find it symbolic and inspiring.

To me at least, it just sounds painfully cheesy, makes me cringe

No argument there.

Speaking as an on-again-off-again tour guide, though (many people worldwide have heard the "Freedom Tower" moniker), I think it will be one of those lingering dual dames for a decade or so - much like Idlewild/JFK and Triboro/RFK.

A number of engineer friends I know equate the name "Freedom Tower" to the same kind of moniker as "freedom fries", so 1WTC is probably a good thing to push on people!

Most of the general public outside of New York City is completely unaware that rebuilding has even begun. I don't think most people have even heard of "Freedom Tower". Most people aren't going to start learning about the work here until the 10th anniversary this September.

On Discovery webcam #2 you can definitely see that they're putting up scaffolding for work on the core.

Looks like I was right, too much wind today. The cranes are tied up and idle.

They might need to re-secure alot of netting too.

News stations had made quite a big deal about new construction happening at the WTC site last Sept. 11, so I'd have to disagree with you on that.

It hard to get an exact replication, as it looks like they use some kind of weird hemispherical lens and then crop it, but assuming they don't move it the Discovery cam on 7WTC will look pretty close to this eventually:

You're in Canada. I don't think that's a place where you can really gauge that, wouldn't you agree? Plus, if you already like skyscrapers, of course you're going to notice that coverage. But it's not a "story". Americans won't really know much about the extent of construction until this year.

Very true. Canadians, like the rest of most of the world, are much better informed of world events than the average American.

I sure hope the weather improves soon. It seems the progress has crawled to almost a stop in the last month, compared to the speed of the pre-Christmas development.
