Was the building predominantly clad in metal or some metallic sheeting trimmed in black marble, onyx or tile? Can't help envisioning the black and gold Security National building a few blocks east, the Selig Building at Third and Western, and the brushed steel of the Western Air Lines Office on Wilshire downtown. Can anyone confirm exactly what colors were used? Same question regarding the tiles. Surely, there must be an advertising post card of the building?

New here, up to page 115 of the thread and anxious to get a few of my pix up. Beginning with the ad further back here for A&P - noting a location in Santa Monica, I immediately recognized a Yale Street and Wilshire store as an old Pet Depot, New Balance and now Sit n Sleep store - looks like they chopped up part of the old store to make a Sushi place and a vitamin store (previously a tuxedo rental place).

Hmmm... how do I make the photos show up?
Well, first welcome to the thread, santamonicadesign. I hope this is the beginning of a long association. Don't let the posting image learning curve buffalo you. It was daunting for all of us with the possible exceptions of ER, GW and Scott (and maybe sopas and a couple of others). I see you're using Flickr which is my hosting site as well, so maybe I can walk you through it. You're really close. Go to your photo-stream and pull up the image you want to post. Above the image you have two prompts (with pull down menus), on the left 'action' and on the right 'share', you want to click 'share' and a box will drop down showing the code for your pic. First you want to look down and scroll through the available sizes (choose a large size, 1024 is good, as we really like the bigger images around here, all the better to ferret out the detail), highlight the size you want and then highlight all the code in the box. Now right click copy and bring it over here and paste it in an open post, add your commentary and, voila'! hit 'post reply' and you're home free. Remember we're Los Angeles (or Southern California) centric, prefer the noir side of things, like the deep history of the city, the architecture, the politics, the movers, shakers and the misbegotten. If you can work in a murder or two, so much the better. Welcome.

Back in the day when I used to build AMT model car kits, the decal sheet would always feature Iskenderian or Isky Cam decals - I never knew what was so special about them but I pasted them on my model stock cars anyway. A few years ago, I was driving from Fox Hills Mall to the 405 when I stopped at a light; as I sat there impatiently waiting, I noticed this little storefront on Slauson - unchanged in at least 50 years!

Okay, now that I've figured out how to work this thing - here's more in the noir vein since it's black and white, old and not there anymore even though it's on Santa Monica Beach - it was next door to Norma Talmadge's beach house (which is still there) so Dick Powell or Humphrey Bogart could have once been lurking nearby. My girlfriend snapped this of me in 1972 - not sure when it was torn down.

1938 - Serendipitous line of cars and trains at corner of 9th and Hill Streets.
Notice the Western Auto Supply character, Saving Sam, at the top right hand corner. Wonder if he wasn't one of Dr. Wheeler's patients.

(Still having fun playing 'Spot the Difference' with these cards, but I guess the main one is the NE corner building.)

Looking for the Western Auto Supply and Bob's Air Mail, both of which are hiding in these photos. Apparently all oil derricks are hiding too. Large images offer plenty to look at.

A spectacular view of the Hollywood Freeway under construction 1952 or 1953.

old cd of mine/ebay I believe

Notice the red car crossing Temple Street. It's traveling south between the two Hill Street tunnels.
(tunnel#1 lower left corner, tunnel#2 behind the apartment building)

Can anyone name the various apartment buildings? -just wondering

Tragic noir. March 17, 1945.

The text mentions a 'nearby hotel'....I wonder which hotel exactly?
Has anyone heard of this murder before?

Great picture! I think '53 is too late. May even be '51. As for apartment building names, my favorite is right there in the bottom/center cut in half by the bottom of the image, the Temp-Hill Apartments.

Spangler was indicted five days later, and by June 2 was convicted and sentenced to five years to life in San Quentin.
