Good riddance to Scott Park, it looked more like a jail than a school

But that Kitchener building will leave a big hole. It's not a great building on its own, but Kitchener can't really afford to lose that type of urban form.

Scott Park School gone in time for Games

After years of negotiations, setbacks and back-and-forth debate, Scott Park Secondary School is officially being demolished to make way for a new $32-million high school — though the state-of-the-art facility will open to students a year later than expected.

Crews are rushing to demolish Scott Park in time for the Pan Am Games, when the former high school will be used for parking.

"My understanding is it's coming down as we speak," said Ward 3 Coun. Matt Green.

I can appreciate why Scott Park High School was not a loved building... brutalism like that seldom is. But I like it... I think it looks good. And it doesn't even appear to be all that old... why did the school board opt to tear it down?

^ The School Board is closing three High Schools in the lower Hamilton area, MacDonald, Delta and Parkview. Scott Park closed maybe like five years ago.

Now the School Board wants to build a single large High School for the lower Hamilton area and well Scott Park/Tim Hortons Field is pretty much dead centre of lower Hamilton area so that's where it's going to be built.

Apparently the renderings and plans for the new High School will be revealed later today, probably this evening.

And before you ask, Delta High School is protected. The City has already designated it.

Kids don't need windows. Attention on studies would obviously suffer if they let the kids have some natural light in the classrooms.

Makes me think of Stratford and Jasper Place and if they were smushed into a single building. The tower in JP is almost there.

There were plans to renovate the Mayfair but they were slow moving and the watermain break punching a whole in the foundation put it at risk.

If you're interested, the city has a page set up with reports and info on the structure: http://www.kitchener.ca/en/insidecityhall/11young.asp

Preventative measures are being put in place on the neighbouring building to ensure it remains safe. The 3 storey section (actually a separate building with a common wall) is being taken down this week.

^I agree with flar. Kitchener can't afford to lose more buildings like that to neglect. Downtown Kitchener is already missing a lot of teeth in its smile.

I think scott park closed in 2001 actually. But I'm glad to hear that Delta is protected from destruction.

Scott Park did close in 2001.

Have parked in the former schoolyard there a few times for Ti-Cats games. Over the years, the tailgating in that lot has become a lot more open.

That thing was a beast. One window per class and the architect designed jails.

Good riddance indeed. A brutal end to a brutal building.
(some of those now exposed steel beams are pretty impressive though)
