Economist ranks Calgary 5th globally in liveability

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/b...vey-finds.aspx

It's a National Post Toronto article, hence the focus on Toronto.

The Top 10:

1. Vancouver (score: 98.0)
2. Vienna (97.9)
3. Melbourne (97.5)
4. Toronto (97.2)
5. Perth (96.6)
5. Calgary (96.6)
7. Helsinki (96.2)
8. Geneva (96.1)
8. Sydney (96.1)
8. Zurich (96.1)

Canada, Australia and Switzerland own.

These are pretty meaningless, however people do read these lists and Calgary's probably the least known in the top ten, so it's good exposure.

F-ing NP! Nice to mention that Canada (and Australia) dominate the top 10, but fail to even mention Calgary. At the same time doing some mighty horn tooting... "Already on the larger size" as far as cities world wide? Ummmmm....

Mercer doesn't included Edmonton as it is "too similar to Calgary" geographically, population, etc. I wonder where we'd be if we were included? Top 10 I assume if Calgary made the list.

Well, I think what the guy meant is that its larger than most other cities rated highly for "quality of life"..which is true - the others, excepting Sydney and Melbourne, are closer in size to Calgary and Vancouver than they are to Toronto.

All of the major cities in Canada, would probably make the top ten or close to it I would think. Does anyone have access to the whole list of cities? I would expect Ottawa to be up there.

The only other Canadian city I know of high on the list was Montreal at #17.

I know many people brush these types of survey's off, but they are great for marketing the city, especially considering we are bidding for the Expo.

I know people (especially if their city isn't on the list) will argue about the criteria, but in the end the fact that Calgary is up on the list is good for the city. People all around the world see the list, so it's a good endorsement for Calgary.

5th is pretty impressive for Calgary, usually we are just outside of the top 20 in these lists.
