Right, because you never see that kind of winter weather around Ottawa, eh?

If you are in a serious accident, the other car is not going anywhere. And if, by chance, some asshole hits you and drives away, you are going to see the ass-end of his car as he speeds away, not the front. How many drunk drivers speed towards the accident they just caused?

(As an aside.. aesthetically, front plates look like shit. Ever see a car commercial with a front license plate?)
In jurisdictions where they only have rear plates, they have no date to compare with. If course rear plates are more important, but front plates can be important to identify vehicles in certain situations (dash cam footage and such).

Police across the country seem to be concerned.

Rear only seems to be pretty common.

So why are cops in other provinces not pushing for a change?

I always thought Manitoba only required a rear plate. I’ve seen many cars with a rear Manitoba plate but no front plate.

I like the new Ontario license plate - but I liked the jingle and promo associated to Yours to Discover

It seems like rear plate only is mostly a thing in certain U.S. states and Canadian provinces.

Pretty much everywhere else I've been in the world they have both front and back.

Have you guys mostly observed the same?

The old black and white ones from the 80's to 1997 only required one.

The current design (97 onwards) has always been two. At least for regular passenger vehicles.

So they announced today, they're going to remain front and back, and they will be available as of February 2020, when the current stock of metal blanks runs out.

Quote:
Yurek says the plates will remain on both the front and back of vehicles across the province.
They also unveiled the new drivers licences.

Currently, all Ontario licence plates issued since 1973 are still valid. The plates are largely unchanged since then, with the slogan changing from Keep It Beautiful in 1983, and a change to having only the serial embossed in 1996. It was the longest running design for a licence plate in Canada, and the second longest in North America after Delaware's which has been in used since the 1963. Delaware allows plates from as far back as 1943 to be used on passenger vehicles.

Ew, that license looks really ugly. The current one is much nicer.

I'm pretty sure the proper spelling for the noun "licenCe" in Canada is with a "c", not a "s". We use the British spelling for this word in Canada, not the American.

Yes, the Canadian spelling is "c" in the noun and "s" in the verb.
