Premier Doer stepping down
By: Staff Writer

27/08/2009

Doer said in a hastilly called news conference today that he won't run in the next provincial election in Oct. 2011.

He would not give the exact date of his resignation, saying it would be decided in consultation with his party.

After 10 years as premier, the time is right for renewal, he said.

Doer was elected premier in 1999 and had led the NDP to three consecutive majorities.

His stepping down opens the door not only his senior cabinet ministers to run for leader, but raises the prospects for Progressive Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen. The Tories have been in the political wilderness because of Doer's popularity.

That helped. I'll give it a whirl...

Now I get it.

with the help of google maps & the perspective of downtown & the virology lab in that last picture, i'm guessing it's that old factory on Henry just before McPhillips (along the yards).

What is/was that place?

RWB KICKS OFF 70TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON! (WINNIPEG, MANITOBA - AUGUST 12, 2009) - Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet is pleased to announce that the 70th anniversary season will officially launch on Wednesday, September 2 at 12:00 pm at the Cancan Kickoff event in conjunction with the Out to Lunch series presented by the Winnipeg Downtown Biz. In the spirit of the RWB's season opener Moulin Rouge - The Ballet, the RWB is asking the Winnipeg community to participate in a huge Cancan kick line for the event with the staff and dancers of the RWB. The Cancan Kickoff will be the first in a series of activities and events planned for the RWB's anniversary season. The Cancan Kickoff will take place in the outdoor courtyard of the Manitoba Hydro building on the corner of Edmonton Street and Graham Avenue from 12:00 to 1:00 pm on Wednesday September 2. Special guests, musicians from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will provide the music for the event, playing traditional French Cancan music as well as a selection of other pieces. Following the dancing portion, guests will be invited to enjoy cupcakes as we celebrate the RWB's birthday. Bring a can and do the Cancan! In addition to celebrating the 70th anniversary, the RWB will be supporting Winnipeg Harvest at the event by asking everyone to bring a non-perishable food item. A non-profit, community based organization, last year Winnipeg Harvest distributed over 9.8 million pounds of food to over 320 Member Agencies across Manitoba, including food banks, soup kitchens, youth programs and drop-in-centres. Food donations can be placed in the collection bins on-site at the event.

This is the kind of stuff I LOVE!!! We have these wonderful cultural institutions and we bring them out of their four walls to the streets. Not only does this give some people the opportunity to experience ballet and symphony for the first time, but the injection of vibrancy to the downtown is much appreciated.

Ciclovia!!!!

It’s time to take to the streets Winnipeg!

On SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 from 8am until 6pm, the ENTIRE NORTH SIDE OF BROADWAY, from Main to Osborne, will be CLOSED TO MOTORIZED VEHICLES for Ciclovia, connecting Assiniboine Park all the way to The Forks!!!

What's Ciclovia?
Ciclovia, meaning “bike way,” began in Bogotà, Colombia, where every Sunday major roads are blocked off and millions of people fill them running, walking, biking and enjoying free outdoor fitness classes like yoga and aerobics.

Ciclovia events have been held all over the world, but have yet to hit Canadian streets until now.

Although talks exist for a Vancouver Ciclovia, WINNIPEG WILL BE THE FIRST CANADIAN CITY TO HOST!

Numerous organizations are hoping to make this a regular event in Winnipeg, and are hosting this pilot project to gauge public interest.

The event will be held from 8am until 6pm, featuring:
- a hay maze
- a farmers’ market
- street vendors
- a kids’ zone
- Street Hockey Zone
- Bike Decorating with Art City
- buskers & live entertainment
- FREE horse drawn wagon rides
- outdoor fitness classes (yoga, zoomba & more!)
and other non-motorized fun!

The lovely all girl group, Oh My Darling, will wrap up the event with a special concert at The Forks’ Oodena Circle at 4pm!!

The goal is to promote physical activity and the environmental benefits of using non-motorized forms of transportation.

So bring out your bikes, blades, boards, & beyond and we'll see YOU Ciclovia Sunday!!!

We're looking for Merchants!

MLCC unionized staff support strike action
CJOB News Team reporting
9/1/2009

Unionized staff at Manitoba Liquor Marts have voted 84 per cent in favour of strike action.

Representatives of the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union claim 30 days of negotiations with the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission have stalled.
They said the MLCC has refused to discuss proposals involving part-time scheduling, full-time employment regulations and hours of work.
Union bargaining committee members are also balking at accepting concessions.

Bargaining between the two sides is scheduled to start again Tuesday.
MLCC spokeswoman Diana Soroka is still hopeful the two sides will come to a mutually satisfying agreement. She would not speculate on whether retail stores would remain open in the event of a strike.
