Please and thank you! That's the strangest thing I've ever seen on an indoor mall site!

A bit noisy at that location, but would be very convenient for shopping, services, and transit for residents of said rumoured building.

The Chinook area is lacking a grocery store. I wonder what site nearby would be suitable for one?

In fact, the Sherway Gardens store might not be the first Nordstrom location to open in Toronto - it's only the first to be announced.
I just had a browse through your blog, some great info on there - well done sir! The ongoing renovations at the Bay in downtown Vancouver look very nice. Do you know if HBC is planning something similar for the Calgary flagship? They've been upgrading the merchandise nicely over the past few years but the store could use a good cleaning, new windows and some interior updates.

How bizarrely personal... the new reporters know she'll even be married in 2015? Very odd wording. That's three years from now.

Agreed. The exterior needs a good cleaning/power washing as it could really sparkle and new windows would help as well.
HBC, Make that terra cotta shine!

What makes you think I'm male? Ok I am . Thank you for the compliments. The Downtown Calgary Bay will be getting further renovations, but unfortunately nothing close to what Vancouver is getting. Calgary will not be getting the women's luxury floor 'The Room', according to its creative director Nicholas Mellamphy, for example. The downtown store could possibly be getting a Bloomingdale's concession, though that still hasn't been finalized. Fortunately Calgary's Bay is about 500,000 sq ft, providing enough room for some creativity. TopShop/TopMan is also a possibility, though I haven't yet heard it confirmed.

Holt Renfrew will be expanding its Calgary store, as per our newest post: http://www.retail-insider.com/2012/0...nd-retail.html

"Calgary's Holt Renfrew store will expands its retail space by about 30,000 square feet within the next year, occupying unoccupied space on the store's fourth floor. This is partly in response to Nordstrom's announcement of a new store at Calgary's Chinook Centre Mall.

The Calgary Holt Renfrew store currently utilizes about 120,000 square feet of its 151,000 square foot gross space. The 30,000 square feet on the store's fourth floor (aka +45 Level) has been vacant since the store opened in a former Sears location October 2009. Holt's didn't want to initially 'overwhelm' the Calgary market with a 150,000 sq ft store after its previous location was only 42,386 square feet.

Holt Renfrew is examining the possibility of opening a restaurant, spa, and private personal shopping suites in the space. Holt's is also looking to expand its contemporary apparel for women, and may consider a combined men's/women's department similar to what will be built in the Holt Renfrew Yorkdale Shopping Centre expansion as we previously reported.

Calgary's original downtown Holt Renfrew was at Penny Lane Mall (R.I.P.), and was only about 16,000 square feet. A second small Calgary location was at Chinook Centre. Both closed, and a replacement store opened at the Calgary Eaton Centre in 1988 at about 28,000 square feet."

A grocery store would presumably have to locate on industrial land east of Macleod, all kind of options there, or on the utility ROW along 50 Ave SW if that development ever goes through in some form.

There is one there, Community Natural Foods is directly north of the train station (Streetview)

Also Co-op is one station away on the train (al bet a bit of a hike from the station)

And if we're talking about the 50th Ave ROW, there's a Sunterra right there too...

There is also a small European grocer nearby too but come on. Neither Community Natural Foods or Sunterra really count as grocery stores. At least not for the vast majority of Calgarians who can't afford to do all there shopping at Sunterra.

The Heritage Co-Op is definitely a realistic option but it is a bit of a distance to have no grocery stores between it and the Mission Safe-Way.

Since Safeway upped its game, Sunterra has become cost competitive on way more things. One thing where that is not true is meat.

There is going to be some news about an expanded Tsuu T'ina Casino that goes beyond their AGLC approvals this past summer. I believe that a hotel is now firmly on the cards, and an 'Entertainment Centre' as well.

I drove past Market Mall late last night. Work is well underway on Target. It appears that the entire interior of the former Zellars has been gutted. Looks like they might be doing some sort of wrap treatment on the exterior just given the bracing that they have up on the exterior walls. I sure hope that it is something sleeker!

New Hotel with conference and banquet facilities, a 2000 seat live performance venue and an expansion of the Casino on the Tsuu T'ina lands. Construction to begin immediately, hotel opened in 2 years with other parts open sooner.

Including neighbourhoods north to Ramsay and Inglewood, that is a huge area of the city without a supermarket. At one time there were Woodward's Food Floor, Safeway, and SuperValu in Chinook Centre.
Also there were Safeways at 17 X 14 SW (McD's now), Elbow X 75 Av and Elbow X Southland.
At least there are viable alternatives like the Kingsland Farmer's Market, Calgary Farmer's Market, Crossroads Market, and the seasonal Blackfoot FM and DJ's Market.
Everything in the inside aisles of supermarkets is processed shit that we shouldn't buy and eat anyway!

I was hoping for movie theatres too! Who is the hotel operator?

I don't have the specifics yet. The Nation are partners with Sonoco Gaming for the casino, and I believe that Sonoco run other casino/hotel complexes, so it may well be them. Not totally sure though.

It's a $65 million project.

I'm hoping they up their game in regards to how the casino expansion and hotel look. I can't say I'm a fan of the concrete bunker look that it has now.

Is this criticism of the architecture of a casino on a reserve? Seriously? There is a time and a place to step it up - this isn't one of them.

It is criticism of the architecture of a casino regardless of where it is located. Grey Eagle is made of painted cement blocks and looks like a concrete bunker.
