I think widening St. Mary's would be horrible too. It would involve massive destruction of an older urban area. Granted St. Mary's is not as nice as Osborne, but it still has many storefront businesses and a lot more character than Kenaston.

Saw that too. I'm hoping.

I guess this is more Fort Rouge than OV, but the CBC building on Warsaw right next to the entrance to the busway is going to be turned into a brewery with a taproom. Nothing particularly exciting visually (good news, bigger windows; bad news, masonry building to be clad with metal).

Item 10 on the agenda here:

OMG, I better snap a picture of it before the signage is perm. removed.

One of those to do list kind of thingies.

It's unfortunate that St. Mary's is such a busy thoroughfare as its actually got quite good character and lots of streetfront businesses. Also really seen a lot of organic growth in the last few years. It really sucks that the sidewalks are right at the street with no buffer from traffic at all.

Oh right, I can go back to 2009 and just download it

I forgot that is an option nowadays. I come from a time before the Internet where if you didn't capture something on film and it disappeared it could not be immortalized or proven it even existed.

Is anyone else scared that this OV streetscaping is going ahead without ANY of the designs being made public, or even seen on SSP first? All the sidewalk lighting has been removed so it's gotta be happening soon.

Update: the OV BIZ let their website expire.

Their transmission tower service group. With the introduction of Digital TV resulting in the retirement of the Analog towers the number of rural re-transmitters they have to look after has gone down drastically so they probably don't need the space they had for the trucks and parts.

I am not sure if the Winnipeg transmission group also looks after the NW Ontario towers.

They no longer broadcast in NW Ontario except maybe in Thunder Bay. Stupidest decision ever made by the CBC. They could still reach all of Canada if they wanted to and add Newsworld and The Documentary Channel on the sub channels. They could make a big impact on this country if they did a little work to get there. Someone should get the ear of the new president or who is the lead now.

Unnecessary waste of tax money.

Why should we spend billions standing up digital antennas everywhere for the few rural people who refuse to get a satellite service from Bell or Shaw?

Yes. That's what a public broadcaster is supposed to do. Also, as technology progresses, pretty sure it doesn't have to be BILLIONS.

Its not a matter of technology. It is the cost of building towers out in the middle of nowhere and leasing/purchasing land for those towers.

Digital TV signals have a much shorter range than analog and require more physical hardware (transmitters) to cover the same area as analog.

It would likely be cheaper for CBC to just pay Bell/Shaw to provide CBC stations for free to those willing to buy the satellite hardware than it would to build infrastructure to support a TINY fraction of the population who WANT CBC in rural communities but don't want ANY other channels.

They started installing the new sidewalk lighting today... they’re identical to what was there before... just new.

While I feared worse, it’s pretty lame they wouldn’t use the opportunity to bring in some new style. Even if they were similar, but squared like the coloured light boxes. It could be cool if the lit up in colours (screams Osborne), but doubt they do.

More details on the building going up where Ralph's Tailor was:

https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/bu...483265403.html

3 storeys. 50% leased already, with a hair salon on the main floor and part of the second; there's a unit with a rooftop patio still available.

Little Pizza Heaven is now the only remaining tenant of that setback plaza.

Smitten closed about a year ago, the tanning salon closed down recently, and TD has posted signs saying the ATMs are being removed at the end of May.

So, vacancy list if I'm getting them all right, from N to S:

-Second Cup
-Luxe&Charm
-Desart
-Smitten
-Fabutan
-TD
-Basils/Black Rabbit/Ward1
-OV Motor Inn
-Western Gold & Diamond
-Osborne Place

Feels like a lot to absorb...

Good. Clean slate. Considering that there are (to my knowledge) only a few landlords that own most of the spaces, perhaps something cohesive and engaging can be done.
