It is difficult to get a good look into the pit. The one spot where there is a bit of a view was filled with construction workers on a smoke break. I didn't want to stick a camera in their faces. It looks to me like there may be some footings poured but no slabs yet.

Not bad. As long as a Dollarama doesn't come along or anything... looks decent.

Someone told me that Dollarama has a goal to have a store for every 6000 residents so I am sure it's in the realm of possibility as sad as it would be.

I'm just curious, where did you hear that? Not knocking it down or anything haha, I just haven't seen or heard of any opening in 6,000+ population places across Western Canada - such as Gimli MB, Ponoka AB, most of rural Saskatchewan... if it was an agressive corporation/franchising goal, I've seen it in places with over 10,000 people (Okotoks AB, Portage La Prairie MB, Swift Current etc), but just not so much on the farmers towns end of things.

Just walked by the site this afternoon and there is now a crane boom(?) in the pit along with the tall free standing crane. So....progress must be happening, even if we can't see it!

It was hearsay I suppose. Basically my wife's hairdresser's partner is a manager and has said that the goal is for a Dollarama for every 6000 people. It seems ridiculous in a city setting. For example I don't think there is a scenario that would make sense for 7 locations in Prince Albert. But perhaps those rural towns/cities you mentioned might make sense. I'm not sure what timeline for it would be and I'm sure they would have to weigh what sort of general store/convenience stores that are already established and so on. Maybe one day having a Dollarama will be akin to having a Boston pizza and the town will have made it! Haha

I don't know how to tie this little rant/post to the baydo project. I apologize.

Noticed over the weekend that the Colliers signage that's up around this project advertising the commercial space states that it's 55% pre-leased.

I was surprised to see that they were using structural steel for the parkade superstructure.

Definitely not typical locally given the environment here but I guessing it's a cost saving measure. I assume the rest of the building will be steel construction with maybe hollow core floors. If that's the case, it should go up pretty fast.

Shangri-La used steel and hollow core construction but that's the only one I recall around here. It only has 1 level of underground parking but I don't remember anything about that portion of the construction.

The parkade of Shangri-La was cast-in-place concrete.

edit: Got myself thinking about this one, so I pulled up the structural plans for it. Shangri-La was an interesting blend of cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, load-bearing masonry and hollowcore. It had a little bit of everything in it. Parkade and main floor were mainly cast-in-place, but then primarily load-bearing masonry above that until you got to the penthouse area that was mainly structural steel.

Lots of heating & hoarding required for the masonry through the winter, as I recall.

Structural Steel is already above ground! By the looks of it they might be using a braced steel frame to resist lateral loads instead of concrete shear walls.

Also, I'm surprised that I haven't seen the concrete elevator and stair shafts advancing in front of the steel structure.

I imagine the Colliers 55% pre-leased is related to the street-level retail space. There’s no way the apartments are already 55% leased.

This building is an abomination. I would have much preferred to look at an empty lot for 5 years if it meant someone else developing it. Baydo's projects are uninspired and focus entirely on the bottom line. Like Jastek, they use a lot of very poor quality Chinese made materials that look good for about 6 months before starting to fall apart.
