High resolution aerial of Downtown Regina (c. 1946)

As some of you know, I'll be announcing the completion of Urban Regina in the next few days.

The website will mostly be a forum like this one, but I will also be adding special features, reports, and other various content to keep the place interesting.

Here is the first of those special features, a high resolution aerial photograph of Downtown Regina, taken in the summer of 1946.

I find stuff like this interesting, so I was hoping some of you would too!

anyways, here is the link

neat aerial shots of the downtown, took you long enough to post them but glad u did. its neat how some areas are prefectly the same as they were 40 years ago and other areas of your down town have completely changed. I noticed some neat buildings that are in the photo that are gone now, and i am just curious what they were.

some examples:

the old building filled with trees on 11th ave and hamilton street

and one one scarth street and 12 ave

guessing by the shadow lines they must be over 5 lines and i am sure that the one on scarth street was destroyed for good reason

if you know the names or have a picture please post it

Historic Buidlings

The building on a tree-filled site at Hamilton Street and 11th Avenue was Regina's first city hall, built in 1908. It was a beautiful Romanesque Revival building that was tragically demolished in 1965. In the 1960s, there was little emphasis on preserving heritage buildings. The ill-fated Midtown Centre took its place, later to become the Galleria mall and finally the federal government's offices. I consider the old city hall to be Regina's worst architectural losses.

If the building at Scarth Street and 12th Avenue is the one in the northwest corner (where McCallum Tower I now stands), then you're referring to the McCallum-Hill Building. It was built in 1910, and at ten stories, it was Regina's tallest building for decades. It was demolished in the early 1980s to make way for the aforementioned McCallum tower, the first of the two glass twins.

Cool stuff! Looking fwd to other features.

If you can make it down to the Plains Museum, maybe you can get some better shots of the old city plans they have, it could be another feature if anyone's interested:

those roads remind of me of D.C. where all the streets are in a pentagram like pattern, which is pretty creepy.
