Deep water dredging was approved today for the port, which will allow the larger ships to come in...

It never even made it out of the legislature so that says all you need to know.

Developer unveils project to transform Miami’s Design District into upscale pedestrian promenade

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/06/0...rylink=addthis

A proposed $312 million makeover of Miami’s Design District would carve out a mini-Lincoln Road mall with luxury fashion shops, restaurants and public spaces.

Developer Craig Robins’ plan to turn Miami’s Design District into a super-high-end retail destination entails cutting a four-block pedestrian promenade anchored by two department stores through the heart of the compact neighborhood, which would also get an extensive green makeover — including rooftops covered in sod, gardens and mature shade trees.

The ambitious scheme, which gets its first public airing before the city’s planning and zoning board on Wednesday, would create a smaller-scale version of Lincoln Road Mall, though one lined with ultra-luxury fashion shops, and dotted with cafes and tree-shaded public plazas to encourage lingering.

Not coincidentally, the layout and scale of the pedestrian passageway also bear a striking similarity to those of Bal Harbour Shops, which is losing many of its luxury tenants to the Design District. But the plan weaves that enclosed-mall template into an intensely urban setting.

“We’ve picked up on the success of those two areas that we know have really worked,” Robins said during a presentation to reporters Monday at the art-filled Design District offices of the development group he leads, DACRA. “It’s about redefining retail and creating a mixed-use urban community at the heart of the city of Miami.”

The detailed blueprint, which DACRA submitted to the city last week as a “Special Area Plan’’ under the Miami 21 zoning code, also makes room for adding a hotel and around 100 units of housing in a mid-rise tower to what has been a commercial-only district. Both would be on the west side of Northeast First Avenue at 39th Street.

Miami International Airport is coming to Metrorail July 28, 2012!
http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/mia...rt-station.asp

Quote:
The Orange Line will run between Dadeland South Metrorail Station and the new MIA Metrorail Station.
The Green Line will comprise the existing Metrorail line from Palmetto to Dadeland South Stations.
You’ll be able to transfer free between the Orange and Green lines at any station serving both lines as long as you remain within the Metrorail paid area.
To get to the new MIA Metrorail Station from north of Earlington Heights Station, board a southbound Green Line train, exit the train at Earlington Heights and board a northbound Orange Line train to the new MIA Metrorail Station.
At the new MIA Metrorail Station, follow the signs to the MIA Mover to ride directly to the airport terminal in less than five minutes.
Metrorail service will double in frequency between Dadeland South and Earlington Heights Stations (the stations that will serve both the Orange and Green lines).
Metrorail fares and hours will remain the same: $2 per trip and 5 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.

^ Great news to hear that the new Metrorail line will open on July 28th. which ironically will be on Miami's 116th. birthday! The configuration at the Earlington Heights station still has me confused though. Does this mean that the Orange line to the Airport will only run back & forth from Dadeland South to the Airport only?

Yes. If you're coming from Hialeah you have to transfer.

Yea, its only the largest private development in Miami's history and one of the biggest going on in the US right now. Probably deserves it own thread somewhere...

A minor project thats easily over looked:

Brickell CitiCentre will offer 5.4 million square feet and will include a shopping center, two residential towers, a hotel, wellness center, service apartments, and two office buildings, as well as underground parking.

I suspect this got swallowed up in all the brouhaha about Genting. But it may end up being the significant (and likely classier) development.

Miami-Orlando rail may lure hotel to station
http://www.miamitodaynews.com/news/120705/story5.shtml

Quote:
According to Mr. Cumber, 95% of people who travel between South Florida and Central Florida go by automobile. With creation of the rail service, Mr. Cumber said he hopes to ease that traffic by providing a more efficient, convenient and environmentally-friendly way for passengers to make the trip.
The route, he said, will include four stops — Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and ultimately Orlando — with a grand central type 9-acre station in Miami between First and Eighth streets by the site of the former Miami Arena, which now is vacant land.
It is expected to be a significant transit-oriented development, according to Mr. Cumber, giving Miami the largest employment presence of the four cities. The station might provide passengers with eateries, offices spaces, a hotel and retail — to be modeled after Paddington Station in the United Kingdom, he said.
Mr. Cumber is looking to locate the Orlando station at Orlando International Airport, which would further move the airport toward becoming an intermodal gateway.

Update on 1100 Millecento Brickell | 42fl |

Another Related project, the nearby Millecento Residences on South Miami Avenue, is over 92 percent under reservation, according to the company. That project, which is designed in partnership with Italian company Pininfarina (famous for its Ferrari designs), should break ground this fall.

The most exciting updates to come out of Miami in a LONG time - because there are pictures. Now I'm starting to get antsy/jealous again up here in Atlanta and I can only hope we keep up when you guys start getting back to speed down there with new high rise projects. So far all of our current projects are in the 10-25 story range (4 going up now and potentially another breaking ground by the fall).

You know things are heating up when you start seeing the inserts in Ocean Drive Magazine again. It had gotten so bad there for awhile the only inserts were projects in Panama City.

Brickell CitiCentre grounbreaking | 6/28/12

MIAMI—Swire Properties on Wednesday broke ground on its $1 billion Brickell CitiCentre project. The mixed-use development is the largest private sector venture of its kind in Miami history.

“We have spent the past 40 years developing world-class mixed-use properties in Hong Kong and Mainland China, creating places where people can live, work and enjoy life, and we are thrilled to be bringing our visionary approach to the U.S.,” Martin Cubbon, CEO of Swire Properties, said in a statement. “Our 30 years of work on the island of Brickell Key have helped establish Brickell as a quality residential address, and I have no doubt that our Brickell CitiCentre project will transform Brickell into Miami’s most vibrant commercial destination.”
