Are these the nicest cabins in the world?
By Paul Kerley
BBC News Magazine
10 January 2016

Quote:
For the book's American examples, Leckart travelled to meet the people behind each project to try to "demystify" cabin life.

In the Rocky Mountains he discovered this tree-house - sitting 30 feet above ground near Sandpoint, Idaho.

The structures hug Western Larch trees - a strong, slow-growing species.

Sweet treehouse. The trees grow tall in Idaho.

Super-eruptions bigger than Yellowstone volcano discovered at Snake River Plain

Quote:
Massive volcanic super-eruptions bigger than those seen at Yellowstone took place between eight and 12 million years ago around Idaho's Snake River Plain, researchers have discovered. Scientists found evidence of at least 12 giant eruptions at the Yellowstone hotspot at a time of intense magmatic activity – a discovery that could shed light on the current state of the volcanic system.

These massive eruptions are believed to have burned an explosive path from Oregon towards Yellowstone over 16 million years. The findings of the study are published in the Geological Society of America Bulletin.

Clif Bar plant in Twin Falls readies for opening

Quote:
Clif Bar has finished heavy construction on its Twin Falls bakery, hired 170 workers and completed more than 25,000 hours of training for its new employees. But the company still hasn’t settled on a date to open the plant.

The Emeryville, Calif., company had originally hoped for April when it broke ground on the 275,000-square-foot bakery last spring.

“The bakery will begin operating in late spring,” spokeswoman Kate Torgersen said Thursday. “The exact date is to be determined. We are planning to celebrate the opening of the bakery later in the summer.”

Oil Change: Idaho-Produced Hemp CBD Coming to the Treasure Valley

"My goal is for Sandpoint to be the CBD capital of the nation."

Quote:
Idaho businessmen Joel Bordeaux and Kelsey Kilmartin watched as dozens of parents pleaded with lawmakers to allow children with severe forms of epilepsy to be legally treated with cannabidiol (CBD) during an emotional 2015 debate at the Idaho Statehouse. The 2015 Idaho Legislature approved a bill that would have legalized the use of CBD, but Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter vetoed the measure after his Office of Drug Policy said the bill was just a step toward legalizing medical marijuana. Meanwhile, Bordeaux and Kilmartin were already working on an alternative.

America's Best Wine Regions to Visit, Ranked by Sommeliers

Quote:
10. Snake River Valley, ID

Must-hit wineries: Bitner, HAT Ranch, Ste. Chapelle

"The Snake River Valley is young and exciting," says Boyle, "and the unique combination of long, warm, sunny days and cool nights produces balanced and food-friendly wines that are starting to make a name for themselves." Of Idaho's three AVAs, this one is the oldest and many of its wineries boast panoramic views of the Snake River and the nearby Owyhee Mountains. Plus, the region is also one of America's best for outdoorsy travelers, so your non-tasting time can be spent hiking, whitewater rafting, or mountain biking.

I figured that scene would be easily recognizable.

I have a Garden Valley photo thread already assembled that I will be posting soon.

A view from Deer Point above Boise on the Boise Ridge, Boise Mountains.
Downtown is to the right of center.
The Owyhee Mountains are in the distance across the valley.

Sun Valley Resort nears 80th anniversary of Lodge opening

Quote:
Next month, the Sun Valley Resort will be paying tribute to the event that made the Wood River Valley the talk of Hollywood—the opening of the Sun Valley Lodge in December 1936.

Eighty years ago, that transformed Ketchum and the valley into Sun Valley, which was to be marketed with the line “winter sports under a summer sun.”
Quote:
Robb noted that “at least a train load” of celebrities was expected by New Year’s Eve, including director Merian Cooper and producers Dave Selznick and Sam Goldwyn. Socialites from New York and Hollywood came on Union Pacific trains bearing the finest amenities. Saks Fifth Avenue had a shop in the Lodge.
Who knew? Idaho has had a Saks in its history.

The 10 Hottest Travel Destinations of 2017

Quote:
Idaho is having a moment. The capital, Boise, may not have an Ace Hotel yet, but it’s quietly setting itself up to be one of America’s most desirable second-tier cities with hip lodging like the Modern Hotel + Bar, indie coffee shops, creative hubs, distilleries, and a serious craft beer scene. And then of course, there’s the incredible access to the outdoors, including more than 190 miles of trails to hike, run, and bike in the Boise Foothills.
