HAMBURG: Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity

„Located on the tip of the HafenCity peninsula, opposite the piers and in close proximity to the Speicherstadt UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Elbphilharmonie’s spectacular architecture is an unmissable, eye-catching landmark. Soaring like a wave at 110 metres above the water, the glass facade appears to be hovering above the brick base of the historic quayside warehouse. A unique building that now moulds the Hamburg skyline, reshaping the city and lifting its musical life to new heights.“ (Image Flyer, www.elbphilharmonie.de)

Excellent series. I need to get back to Hamburg (perhaps when it doesn't look even grayer and darker than London).

Hamburg have some really nice architecture. Hafencity reminds of Västra Hamnen in Malmö.

Great stuff - looks like a brilliant neighbourhood, even in winter.

So do I. Man, I don't mind what they may say about themselves sometimes, Germany's quite something lovely whenever they will be real good, eh.
What a serious piece of contemporary urban design. That last shot alone for example should bring anyone a boner.

Beautiful shots and Beautiful city!
I would love to visit, maybe split a trip between Hamburg and Amsterdam.
Any problems navigating around the city if I only speak English?

thanks for sharing!

No. You'll never have any problem over these places, if you act as a good boy.
Which means you don't get ridiculously drunk or stoned, cause they would feel insulted. I kinda know the Dutch to the French... Don't throw up over their usually clean sidewalks (they're no Parisian with their pitiful dogs shitting all sidewalks without a care), then they will speak some fair English to you, but only if you're a worthy person. Trust me : )

Wow! What a change from a few years ago, when there was nothing in this section of Hamburg. They did a really good job.

These Northern European "new city in the old harbor" projects usually come off as kinda sterile and suburban, but Hafencity looks like an A+ project. Great job and 100x better than the Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Stockholm equivalents. Probably the best-looking modern urban neighborhood in Germany.

And love the pic of the Speicherstadt; those are some of the most interesting warehouses anywhere.

I lived in Hamburg for two years and was back recently to visit in December. Thank you for posting all the great photos! I took this photo from my hotel room in St. Pauli. It really shows the impact of the Elbphilharmonie on the Hamburg skyline -

Very nice. My dad's family is from Hamburg.

This woman on the left looks like she could be related to me. She reminds me a lot of my aunt.
