It looks like the drive through BB&T bank on the southwest corner of 5th and Nueces has been cleared out. Does anyone have any idea what may be going on there? It seems like a good candidate for redevelopment.

All the renderings are still on the management site. But... yeah the only permit I could find in addition was for the gas to be disconnected.

This is all I could find for that address. They were also doing some interior work last year.

A CVC determination request was filed today for the surface lot across 7th St. from Block 87. It functions as a homeless shelter overflow site with Willie watching over everyone.

Imgur is down, so I'm using another random photo hosting site. So let's see how that works.

Permit:
https://abc.austintexas.gov/web/perm...ertyrsn=200948

Here's the site:

Only about 1/3 of the site has a CVC:

Towers' has an article about the Palm School site development study. The County is vacating the site and wants to develop it and preserve Palm School. The study provided three development options:

https://austin.towers.net/developmen...m-school-site/

My favorite of the three options is the one with a 27-story tower on the NE corner of the site.

Whatever is built there should interact with the park Also, if the Palm School is going to be for public use, then it would be nice to have it be connected to the park. So the the concept 3 plan might be the better one since it would it wouldn't wall off the building from the park.

Yeah that park could use some investment, it isn't super accessible to anything right now and it's right on the interstate there. it'd be nice if there was easy pedestrian access from east of I-35 and easier access from the Rainey street buildings.

I'm partial to concept #2. For some unexplained reason, I always liked the Palm School building as non-descript dare I say insignificantly architecturally challenged as it is, it seemed very 'Texan' to me when I moved here 30 years ago. #2 doesn't overwhelm the main building like #3 would, plus, #3 would block the view of one of the few features on the Fairmont that I like...the vertical notch, at least from the due east. Whatever they do, that dreadful park next to it could use some deep pocket renovations. I think it would be a good location for a significant sculpture garden. And some more Palm trees, and maybe a replica of the Alamo.

Yes! And make it even bigger and better than the original! It will also be newer and not look so old and "historic."

Blue glass would also be a must. And maybe they could one up the Fairmont with a taller spire.

Possibly routine maintenance since its been 8 years since completion or it could be preventative maintenance to get out in front of the falling glass issue they have had in the past. Just speculation...

This is probably worthy of its own thread, but we don't have much info yet. A site plan was filed today for "construction of high rise office building with mixed use along with associated improvements." The project is called The Republic, and is at 400 E. 4th.

https://abc.austintexas.gov/web/perm...rtyrsn=1162618

Here's the location across the street from the convention center. The fire station and parking lot are the only spots on that block that aren't parkland. This one will be interesting.

I think the address on the permit should be W. 4th and not E. 4th - especially since it is called the Republic. This would make it across the street from Republic Square, and this would also be the 308 Guadalupe block.

A few more permits here. I was wanting to go pull a couple of CVC determinations I'd seen over the weekend, and then I found this site plan that just applied today. The address is 400 East 4th Street, which would place it on the southern half of the Brush Square block - south of the fire station.

This is the one I was looking for. It's for the southwest corner of East 7th & Neches Streets. The lot now is just a parking lot.

This one would be for 608 West 5th Street - northwest corner of West 5th & Nueces Streets. It's at the site of the Horizon Bank.

EDIT: you beat me to it, ATX.

I'm surprised they're considering a tower for the Brush Square block. I know the fire station is there, but I remember us discussing before that the fire station could be moved and the park restored. Otherwise, we could just go all in and develop the park. I don't think many people realize that's actually a park.

That has to be an error -- Brush Park just held its first public community planning meeting two Saturdays ago . . .

Quote:
The city of Austin Parks and Recreation Department will host a master planning effort for Brush Square from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the square, 409 E. Fifth St.

The planning process will engage the public in the development of a vision and conceptual master plan for the downtown square. In addition to enhancing the square’s green space and trees, the effort will respond to the highly urban context of the square, which includes the adjacent Convention Center, Lance Armstrong Bikeway and the expanding Capital Metro Downtown Station.

The master plan process will result in cost estimates, phasing recommendations for short- and long-term capital improvements, as well as financing strategies.
https://www.mystatesman.com/news/loc...fI2ZdrqkBUhXO/

This is almost certainly is the Courthouse Block at 400 W. 4th. . . . the permit itself states the current use of the land is "parking lot."
