World's longest spans

World's longest span is the span of the 132 kV powerline from Nuuk to Buksefjord Hydroelectric Power Plant
over Ameralik fjord with a span width of 5376 metres.
The span, which was built in 1993, has a width of 190 metres and consists of 4 steel ropes with a diametre of 40 mm. One
of the ropes is a backup rope.
Each of the ropes is carried at its North End, which is 444 metres above sea level and at its South
End, which is 1013 metres above sea level by its own pylon. All pylons are small in comparision
to the dimension of the span!

World's second and third longest spans crosses Sognefjord in Norway. The have widthes of
4850 metres, respectively 4520 metres. As at Ameralik Span, each conductor is carried by its
own pylon and there is also a backup conductor. The towers, which are also very smal in comparision
to the span length, are situated for the 4850 metres span 780 metres above sea level at the North side
and 490 metres above sea level at the South side of the span.
The 4520 metres long span runs in East-West direction. The towers at the West site are 470 metres,
that of the East site 590 metres above sea level.

What keeps the cables from whipping around in the wind and getting tangled with one another?

1. The large distance between them - in order to ahieve this, each conductor is fixed on its own pylon
2. Oscillation dampers in the rope
