Apologies everyone, I haven’t had the free time to do an update, but I’ll look into doing something comprehensive soon.

It is crazy to think that by 2020, London could potentially have six stadiums above a capacity of 60,000
Wembley: 90,000
Twickenham: 82,500
Olympic Stadium: 60,000
New Stamford Bridge: 60,000
Emirates Stadium: 60,000
New White Hart Lane: 60,000?

Olympic Stadium
Firstly in response to eleven=11, this is what the Olympic Stadium now looks like with its new roof nearly complete.

The Olympic Stadium is due to host an Anniversary Games later this month and be used as a venue for the Rugby World Cup in September & October. West Ham United (the Premier League football side) will relocate into the stadium early next year.

New Stamford Bridge, 60,000
Plans have been unveiled for the new redeveloped Stamford Bridge. The ground – home to Chelsea FC – currently has a capacity of 41,800, and is hemmed in one two sides by railways lines and urban development on the other two. Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich has sought a new home for many years, but the search has proven fruitless due to a historical anomaly over the rights to the Chelsea name and the pitch.

To resolve the predicament, Herzog & De Meuron has been tasked with redeveloping the site to create a new fully modern 60,000 capacity venue, which looks very cathedral like. The railway lines would be covered to allow for the stands to be enlarged, whilst a new more direct entrance to Fulham Broadway tube station would be created.

It won’t come cheap: the price tag is estimated to be £500mn ($780mn), but it would significantly improve matchday revenues and a better experience. If everything were to go to plan, the stadium could be complete by 2020. During the 3 year construction phase, Chelsea would have to relocate, likely to either Twickenham or Wembley.

New White Hart Lane, 56,000
Groundwork continues on the new WHL which is being constructed immediately to the north of the present ground.

The original plans were for half of the new stadium to be built to allow for the club to relocate, before the present ground is demolished, allowing for the southern half to be complete. That sounds like a logistical nightmare – and possible a world first – and there is now speculation that new plans will be unveiled later this summer which could see that plan ditched in favour of a temporary relocation to Wembley Stadium. There has also been speculation that the revised design could see an increase in capacity to 60,000 to be on-par with London rivals Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium and Chelsea’s redeveloped Stamford Bridge.

New White Hart Lane, 61,000
As per my previous post a week ago, plans have been unveiled for the latest replacement for White Hart Lane. The two big developments are:
- Proposed capacity increased to 61,000, with Populous the architects.
- There will be a retractable pitch - this means that the NFL (who have signed a 10 year agreement to play 2 matches a year at the new WHL) will have a dedicated pitch to play on.

Some other changes include:
- The largest single tier ‘Kop’ stand in the UK with a capacity of 17,000.
- Historical Grade II listed buildings to be integrated into a new museum.
- An enlarged public space comparable in size to Trafalgar Square, this is possible due to the footprint of the stadium being reduced.
- A new hotel, community health centre and extreme sports venue including the tallest indoor climbing wall in the world.
- 579 new homes which will be built across several towers immediately to the south of the stadium.
- And a ‘sky walk’ attraction around the roof of the stadium (like that across the Millennium Dome or Sydney Harbour Bridge).
- White Hart Lane station (now a London Overground station) will be completely rebuilt with a new station entrance, ticket hall and wider platforms.
- Northumberland Park station in the east will also be rebuilt with an additional platform, removal of the level crossing and drastically improved match day & non-match day service.
- Work to rebuild the National Rail and London Underground station at Tottenham Hale are also due to progress.

Basement works are well under way, and the club is hoping to be playing at the new WHL in August 2018 prior to the commencement of the 2018-19 season. Further detail: http://populous.com/news/2015/07/08/club-announcement

New Stamford Bridge, 60,000
Chelsea FC have moved forward with a public consultation of their plans to completely rebuild Stamford Bridge. Designed by Herzog and de Meuron, the stadium profile was heavily influenced by the adjacent Brompton Cemetery, hence the cathedral-like arches and circular roof. Lastly, 4 million bricks will be used in the stadiums’ construction.

Olympic Stadium, 60,000
With the Rugby World Cup nearing, various test events have been taking place at the renovated post-legacy Olympic Stadium. I myself have some tickets for the France v Romania match, so will be interesting to see how the stadium copes when at capacity. The pictures also show the temporary seating that is erected when not in athletics mode, and interestingly West Ham United let slip that there is space to raise the capacity to 66,000 for football matches by filling in the top tiers should there be demand.

It was also announced that a digital wrap would be installed, with a targeted completion date of the 27th May 2016.

I think the Stamford Bridge design is a mixture of both and is certainly unique.

The retractable pitch will be located under the south ‘Kop’ stand which is adjacent to where the high-rises are currently planned for. Not many images have been released, but I believe the following image shows the ‘storage’ area for the pitch.

I haven’t updated this thread in a few months, and there has been a lot of movement, so I’ll start to make a few updates in the coming weeks.

New Stamford Bridge – 60,000
The planning application for the new Stamford Bridge was submitted late last year, the Herzog & de Meuron designed stadium will replace the current 40,000 capacity stadium.

New White Hart Lane, 61,461

Work continues on Tottenham Hotspurs' New White Hart Lane. As per my previous posts and the following aerial, you can see the old stadium and the developing footprint of the new stadium. One corner of the old stadium has already been demolished, but the club are still resident whilst works continue to progress on the northern and main stands of the new stadium. I cycle past this daily and it is really starting to make its presence known on the street.

Our fellow American SSP'ers will undoubtedly get to know the new WHL, as the NFL have signed a contract for at least two matches a year to be played there. The new stadium comes with a dedicated retractable pitch enabling the possibility of a football and American football match to be held on the same day.

^ Gotta love how Tottenham is constructing the new stadium. It reminds me a bit of how Athletic Bilbao built the new San Mamés recently:

I'm glad they decided to build a new stadium at the current location. That way we Gooners may still be able to sing "We Won The League At White Hart Lane" for generations to come.

It’s been a pretty busy year on the London stadium front. There has also been a scattering of <10,000 venue development, but I will possible concentrate on that in a separate post, along with updates on the new Luton Stadium (17,500) and Southend FC Stadium, both of which lie just beyond the M25. I’ve been pretty busy most of this year, so must confess, that a lot of the detail for this post is down to the hard work of skyscrapercity.com forum member RMB2007.

Oval, 40,000
One of the most historic stadiums in the UK, Surrey County Cricket Club have unveiled their plans to increase capacity of the Oval Cricket Ground to 40,000. Work will commence in 2019 and undertaken in phases.

Twickenham Stoop, 25,000
Harlequins have announced that they have employed the services to Populous to expand their south-west London stadium the Twickenham Stoop (not too be confused with the nearby Twickenham Stadium) from the current capacity of 14,800 to 25,000. The Stoop has been home to Harlequins for 54 years, and has been operating at high capacity for many years now. Plans are at an early stage, with more details emerging in the New Year. Further details: http://www.quins.co.uk/news/harlequi...ickenham-stoop

To get an idea of how close the Stoop is the Twickenham (both are rugby stadiums), check out the last image of the next report on the East Stand redevelopment at Twickenham.

Twickenham Stadium, 82,000
Work continues on the East Stand redevelopment at Twickenham will modernise the East Stand and increase the hospitality offering during match-days. New space will also be created for non-match-day activities. Work commence in 2016 and is due to be complete by autumn 2018.

Craven Cottage, 30,000
Fulham FC have submitted a planning application for the Riverside Stand which will see a completely redeveloped stand incorporating increased capacity and hospitality on the Thames waterfront. Further detail: http://www.fulhamfc.com/news/2017/de...iverside-plans

Crystal Palace, 34,000
Selhurst Park has been the home of Crystal Palace since 1924 and has experienced multiple expansions over the years. The club have now announced plans to redevelop and double the capacity of the current Main Stand. This will increase the stadium capacity from the current 26,000 to 34,000. The development will include amendments to the Whitehorse and Arthur Wait stands, a museum, non-matchday facilities and increased space for hospitality. Crystal Palace hope to secure planning permission next year with work starting at the end of the year.

New Loftus Road, 30,000
Having lost out on acquiring a site for a new stadium in Old Oak Common, QPR have announced that they are exploring redevelopment of the nearby Linford Christie athletics stadium. The stadium is owned by Thames Valley Harriers (athletics club), and QPR are keen on exploring a partnership to construct a 30,000+ capacity stadium as well as an adjacent athletics stadium and track. AFC Wimbledon, 11,000/20,000
Wimbledon AFC announced earlier this year that they have confirmed a contractor to take forward designs for the new home for the club. The initial design will be for a capacity of 11,000, but with an intention to increase to 20,000 in due course.

As mentioned previously, their performance on the pitch has improved, as has their attendance, and they now pull in an average crowd of over 4,000. Unfortunately, their present home of Kingsmeadow (located in the Royal Borough of Kingston) is at capacity and lacks many modern amenities of a club with ambitions to go further. The club is now looking at relocating to Plough Lane in Wimbledon which was the original home for the historic Wimbledon FC between 1912-1991, and which is currently a greyhound racing track.

Brentford Community Stadium, 17,250
Brentford have unveiled revised plans for their West London stadium. The original plan was for a capacity of 20,000, but to ensure that the club are on a more sustainable footing, the club has opted to reduce the capacity to 17,250.

Lord's Cricket Ground, 32,000
Lord’s is one of the oldest venues in constant use on the planet; a few years back it celebrated its 200th anniversary. The age and piecemeal upgrades over many decades has however created a mish-mash of stands that are inefficient and not suitable for the modern-era. Capacity is currently 28,000, but Middlesex County Cricket Club are looking to overhaul the venue, and increase capacity to 32,000. Part of the first phase included the construction of a new stand – the Warner Stand – adjacent to the Grade II listed pavilion.

New White Hart Lane, 61,559
Latest pictures from the end of November of Tottenham Hotspurs stadium under construction in North London. A few notes from the picture:
- The rigging that will form the perimeter of the roof is clearly visible; once complete this will be raised and supported by the perimeter superstructure which is nearing completion
- The final steelwork at the southern end of the stadium (where the old WHL used to reside) is now rising
- The Kop (the large single tiered stand) is now coming together

If you look carefully at the pictures, you can also see the large storage facility which will house the NFL pitch. The new WHL is to my knowledge unique in that it will have two pitches, thereby giving NFL players a pristine pitch to play on, as well as avoiding cutting up the primary football pitch. The second pitch will be hidden beneath the stadium and surrounding residential development.

In other news, the All England Lawn Tennis Club (owners of Wimbledon) approached the members of the Wimbledon Park Golf Club which is directly across the road from the Wimbledon venue. The AELTC offered each golf club member £50,000 to put them out of their current lease which expires in 26 years. Wimbledon currently covers 42 acres, but the golf club covers 73 acres, potentially resulting in a substantial expansion: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...r-grounds.html

The ‘Golf Ball’ Arena – 20,000
The owners of New York’s Madison Square Gardens have released an image for a 20,000 capacity arena that they propose to construct adjacent to Stratford station in East London. The rather spectacular design – already given the name: the ‘Golf Ball’ – is spherical in design, 130m tall, and would be elevated off the ground by a series of giant pylons.

The ‘Golf Ball’ would be a direct competitor to AEG’s 02 Arena (also 20,000 capacity) which is just three stops south on the Jubilee Line, and Wembley Arena (12,500 capacity) over in north-west London (also on the Jubilee Line).

London Series – 2019

Major League Baseball: London Stadium to host two fixtures in 2019
BBC Sport | 8 May 2018 | https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/baseball/44038752

Quote:
The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will play each other in two Major League Baseball regular season games at the London Stadium in 2019.

The matches, which will be held on 29 and 30 June, will be the first MLB games to be staged in Europe.

MLB says it intends to play again in 2020 and establish "a long-term footprint in the city".
A rather interesting - if unsurprising - development noting the activities of the NFL over the years. The London (Olympic) Stadium will be configured for a capacity of 55,000. I note as well that the MLB's Commissioner Rob Manfred also has aspirations for London to become home to a permanent franchise one day. If such a situation materialised, it up with a dedicated high-capacity baseball venue
