Here's the new Woodlawn Jewel, from yesterday:

I wish they would have put the lot in the back (or maybe even side?), but it's a good thing for the neighborhood regardless. The area between the 63rd/Cottage green line stop and campus has really improved since I started working at UChicago.

Might be a dumb question, but what is the difference between modern, postmodern, contemporary, and international?

I did some brief reading, but they all seemed to blend together a bit

Yikes. That's the sort of question on which entire Art History dissertations are written. But briefly:

International Style was the label given (by an important Museum of Modern Art show) in the 1930s to the new ahistorical architecture coming out of Europe, particularly the Bauhaus. The label followed Mies to America, and was the dominant style for office towers from the late 1950s through the 1970s.

Modern is much less specific, but mostly indicates the ahistorical architecture of the 1920s to today, whether or not it was as restrained as Miesian International Style. Frank Lloyd Wright and Otto Wagner on one end, Cesar Pelli and I.M. Pei on the other—all would be "Modern," but not "International Style."

Postmodern was the counterrevolution in the late 1980s and 1990s to Modernism. Instead of rejecting all history, it made reference to historical architectural forms, but in an ironic way, with a wink. So you have the pretend pediment of Philip Johnson's AT&T, the pasted-on ornament of Michael Graves's Humana Tower or Portland Building, and the Chicago architecture pastiche—on only three sides—of Thomas Beeby's Harold Washington Library Center.

Contemporary is merely the architecture of the current moment—though writers will often use the word to describe certain works as if it has some meaning the reader should already recognize. Few architects like to think of themselves as being part of a group movement, but merely creating the best building for the client and the site. Thus we often apply style labels retroactively to buildings from a certain time period, in the same way we retroactively can picture "1980s fashion" or "1950s automobiles."

^I would agree with most of that except Postmodernism started a lot earlier than the late 1980s.

Well it looks like the Nederlander / Oriental Theatre name swap won't be as dramatic as some anticipated

Might take some getting used to, but not a big deal since the sign appears to be identical with different lettering.

Inside the $1B restoration of the old Cook County Hospital, ‘a city unto itself’

By Rachel Hinton@rrhinton | Chicago Sun-Times

The old Cook County Hospital’s grand, beaux-arts façade is mostly obscured by a white tarp-like covering these days as construction crews work at demolishing some of the old features of the historic building to make way for a hotel and office complex that county officials hope will transform the Illinois Medical District and Near West Side.

Efforts to restore the façade on the front of the building at 1835 W. Harrison St. started last fall. Once finished, it will be the extravagant face of a $1 billion plan to rebuild the 102-year-old building inside and out.

John Murphy, chair of the Murphy Development Group — which is one part of the Civic Health Development Group that was picked to redevelop the hospital — says the effort is on track to finish on time, by 2020, and they’re 70 percent through the demolition phase.

“What is old, and some view as ugly, is going to be restored to new,” Murphy said.

Im not sure it is worth it.

Its not like it is the old post office space here.

1 B is a hell of a lot of dough. Not even in the Business district. So many addons its not even one building. Its a patchwork. Should have been torn down.

No Idea how anyone can make money on this not even super large beast.

Two hotels are going into this building as well as a small museum so i am pretty sure it'll be fine. Also, I'm glad it was not torn down. It's a beautiful building.

You have got to be out of your mind.

If this had been torn down, it would’ve been a tragedy.

This is one of Preckwinkle’s triumphs as Cook County Board President

Not sure where the billion dollar number came from, but it almost certainly encompasses more than just renovating this building. There's several other phases after this portion is complete.

One billion is maybe how much the entire project all together costs? Future phases, infrastructure, etc?

There's also not really "addons", what exists was all built as one structure. The later phases were the rear wings, which have been demolished, but those were also always planned. The existing building was designed to take the place of the previous CCH and connect to its wings, which were subsequently replaced in phases.
