A long-awaited continuing care facility isn’t expected to open in the Parks of West Bedford until late spring or early summer of 2010, but the bright, multi-coloured building is already attracting a lot of attention.
“People have lots of questions about the different colours. It’s blue, yellow and orange on the outside, and the reason is so that residents and their families can identify with a specific colour,” explained Holly MacLean, public relations officer for Northwoodcare Inc.
“When you give directions to your home, you talk about things like colour. When people are passing, they can point to a colour and say ‘That’s where my grandmother lives.’”
Construction of the Northwood West Bedford Continuing Care Centre began in late 2007 at a site on Bluewater Road, just off the Hammonds Plains Road.
A June 29 public meeting was held to answer questions about the facility. MacLean said in addition to questions about the building’s colourful design, those who attended wanted to know how residents will be selected.
“Admission is not determined by us, but by the Department of Health,” MacLean said.
People also asked about Northwood’s adult day program, which MacLean confirmed will be offered at the site. There will also be opportunities for community outreach.
Another issue that often crops up in the Bedford area was brought forward during last month’s public gathering. A lack of meeting space in Bedford is a long standing problem that Northwoodcare is hoping to help alleviate with the opening of their new facility.
“We will have meeting space. We have a community room with the option for (community) meetings after hours when it’s not being used,” MacLean said. “I think people were happy to hear that.”
The 150-bed facility will offer Level I, Level II Care and Residential Nursing Care.
It comprises two levels with essential services on the main floor. The beds will be arranged into small neighbourhoods with two clusters of 12 rooms each.
The facility encompasses 148,000 sq. ft. Each private room will be 190 sq. ft. Geriatric and couple’s rooms will be 250 sq. feet.
MacLean said Northwood was thrilled to be able to offer 20,000 square feet of wheelchair accessible outdoor space, which includes rooftop terraces and courtyards.
“It’s starting to look really nice inside. It’s definitely going to be a really exciting new addition to the Northwood family,” MacLean said.
The facility is part of the provincial government’s Continuing Care Strategy. The new building will serve the Cobequid region of Bedford, Sackville, Hammonds Plains, Fall River, Waverley, Wellington, Windsor Junction, Beechville, Lakeside and Timberlea.
