[Stoney Creek] 5 King Street East | ?m | 2 fl | Under Construction

Hamilton Community News - Stoney Creek Tailors owner adding to family legacy

By Laura Lennie | May 10, 2016

The owner of Stoney Creek Tailors is bringing a new building to the downtown core.

Herman Demirci is having a two-storey, mixed-use building constructed on land he owns at 5 King St. E. The property, next to Shoppers Drug Mart, has been in the Demirci family for about 30 years.

"The development is really my dad's idea," he said of his father who founded Stoney Creek Tailors at 59 King St. E. in 1968 and still works at the shop at age 84. "It's a legacy thing for my dad, another way for him to contribute and leave a mark in Olde Town Stoney Creek."

Demirci got site plan approval in January 2012 and received a building permit in early 2014 from the City of Hamilton.

He said the building's first floor will feature 2,200 square feet of retail space and the second level will be a residential loft. There also will be nine parking spots at the back.

"The building is going to be very aesthetically pleasing," Demirci said. "It also will keep with the look and theme of Olde Town Stoney Creek."

Construction already has begun at the site.

Demirci said all of the underground servicing work is complete thanks to the reconstruction of King Street project, which wrapped up late last year

The foundation has been dug, forming of the walls is underway and framing work should start this week, he said.

"We're going to hopefully finish this year," Demirci said. "We haven't actually advertised the building at all. We'll build it and then we'll worry about renting it out."

Wow, it looks like a refurbished heritage building. We could use some of this style in the core. Great job!

In terms of realness, the portico is a dead giveaway... Also, the type of stone and layout looks new and kitschy.
