I've done all I can; and I've asked many at my workplace who agree with me to do the same.

Yeah, he seems to be mostly in favor of the idea, including the location at the Forks, so I guess he partly gets it. Brodbeck and Fielding are actually neighbors and pals -- I think they've been drinking the same coolaid, so I wouldn't expect Brodbeck to be too oppositional.

Looks like the water park proposal will not pass at City Council today. Most likely, the proposal will be amended and sent back to the drawing board with requirements that CanAlta provide detailed drawings of all buildings, a fully formed public access agreement, and undertake consultation with the Forks and CMHR.

And that motion got defeated.
The debate goes on and the vote will too.
Am watching Bartley Kive's live blog on the debate... it definitely sounds polarized in there.

Apparently Councilllor Wyatt says the people against this are from the "Artsy-Fartsy" crowd.

#wpgcouncil Mayes now pokes fun of Wyatt's insistence opponents are from "artsy-fartsy" crowd. [via Twitter]

Boy, I sure feel "Artsy-Fartsy" right now.

Didn't stay in the hotel portion, but the Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls has a decent water park. definitely bigger than Grand Forks.

They should build something like that. The water park part, not the hotel. well maybe the hotel. didn't see what the hotel looked like, so I won't judge that part.

Well look at that...

bkives: #wpgcouncil Fielding said he likes Canalta proposal but "I'm in love with my constituents" and will support Vandal motion.

and now they've voted to defer the final vote for 70 days.

I attended the meeting in person, and it is very obvious which councillors have a head on their shoulders. I really like Jenny Gerbasi's arguments along with Orlikow, who brought some new and interesting arguments to the table. Brian Mayes seemed very bright, and had some jokes. Mike Paktaghan and Nordrman had very good points as well. Harvey Smith almost swore he was so disgusted that this was even being considered. Russ Wyatt's speech made no sense, and Scott Fielding constantly contradicted himself as he always has saying he is glad we are getting a world class facility, only to follow later saying he wished it was bigger. Good points from two delicates and a third I could not at all understand.

I hope CanAlta just leaves the table because they don't want to spend the money on the preliminary design and renderings of their hotel.

It's Bizarro World here in Winnipeg today when fiscal conservatives like Swandel/Havixbeck cling to their undying support for a $7-M taxpayer subsidy to a private developer...while, simultaneously, the councillors who are the furthest to the left (Eadie/Gerbasi) expound on the market virtues of selling city land to the highest bidder.

Certain city councillors know how to get greased (Swandel/Havixbeck) while the lefties (Eadie/Gerbasi) don't.

Awesome! I know one of those people... I'll have to speak with him about possible minor copyright infringements... otherwise, hilarious!!!!
Considering Matt Groenings connection to Winnipeg, I'd love to hear his reaction to this!
