Try that during the morning commute. There is no way you can get from deep in East SGV to Santa Monica in 1hour.

Some random stuff to hopefully end this dreadful rail conversation.

Looks like they're just about done removing the underground storage tanks at the CIM lot, maybe will they proceed with groundbreaking.

And the list. I haven't updated it in about a month since no official news has changed (if it has please link / correct me so I can keep it current). If one believed in the official word then one could expect the following projects to break ground within a week:

-4th & Broadway 34 Story Tower (SCG Assets)
-4th & Hill 33 Story Tower (Equity Residential)
-12th & Grand 37 Story Tower (Mack Urban)
-Apex 2 28 Story Tower (Holland Partner Group)
-Park 5th (just the stubby) (MacFarlane Partners)

^Things typically break ground later than they're rumored to. Onni's 50 story was suppose to break ground back in November.

That's what I thought but they're just fixing the Pershing Square station entrance on that corner.

Eh .

People won't be taking the azusa to sm all the time.

There are people who commute the same crazy distances in dc, Chicago etc via trains.
2 hrs.

Back of the napkin math say that amounts to 1 hour 49 minutes, plus another 6-10 minutes for transferring between trains.

Although to be quite frank, I'm not sure why anyone would want to make that trip on Metro Rail. A four-hour round trip just to go to the beach? Count me out.

Yeah, exactly. That's my point. People say, "Now you can take the metro from Azusa to Santa Monica with only one transfer!"

No one is going to be doing that, sorry. Especially if you plan on bringing any substantial belongings. If you want to go to the beach, you wake up early and jump in the car.

Even in NYC where a train from Brooklyn - say like the upper west side of Manhattan can take like an hour and a half to two hours... According to my friend who's from there

Yea it would be pretty far, but when I brought it up I wasn't thinking of a strictly end-to-end route. Sure, you would have the option to go from Azusa to SM, but I was thinking more so if you wanted to go from Azusa to say...Culver City or somewhere closer. Would a car still be a better option? I'm genuinely asking, as I live in Westminster/HB area so I don't have to travel there often.

I noticed from my office window at City Hall that the bus island and protected bike lanes are under construction on both sides of Los Angeles street at Temple street

Hey fellow SSP-sters, check out my interview on FOX 11 about Downtown LA developments (including 8th Street being the new hot spot, agree disagree?)

LOLOL.

I've done this commute tons of times, ONLY time it takes that long is non-rush hour and on weekends (even then, the tourist traffic is a pain).

And, as eluded to earlier, parking is another story, especially as you head further West into LA. You either have to pay to park or drive around for 15 darn minutes searching for a spot.

Bad Traffic Azusa to Santa Monica is 1 hour and 5 minutes???? I lived in Santa Monica and had to commute to Boyle Heights. Average traffic was an hour just to get there. 30 minutes without traffic.

Right now Google says 47 minutes from Asuza to Santa Monica. If you are leaving in Rush hour traffic, it is between 1:30 and 2:50 according to google.

I'm betting it would be worth it for good beach days, especially since last time it took me 30 minutes to get a parking spot in SM. And Azusa is the worst example of this race because there is 10 miles of easy freeway. If you are comparing Pasadena or closer, Metro will win every single time.

It's not necessarily about rail being faster than cars. It's about convenience, cost, ease, being able to work or read, not fighting traffic, etc.

I know, that's absolutely correct.

But who needs public transportation? I guess the traffic will become better once we have more people here on our roads. (and L.A. is growing) More people, less traffic, I think that's how it works.

@brudy

You got it.

Finalists for Pershing Square. I'm content with whatever we get. They all have a lot of green
